A Different View

I'm Larry Wiley.  I was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana.  As a youth, I grew up in impoverished communities.  It was hard being teased, looked down upon and basically forgotten because of what children like me did not have.

I got involved in sports, and it changed my life.   I had talent, so it helped me to feel like I had something.  I could've been dead and in a lot of trouble, had God not placed me on the right path.  Playing football kept me out of the wrong places at the wrong time.  I'm grateful to God for that.

Now that God's blessed me to make it out, my wife, I and others want to help others.  My heart hurts for the children who are overlooked and judged based upon the color of their skin, or economic class; which is why we want to help in the Parkview community, in Monroe, Louisiana.

Parkview is a spring of life.  It's filled with hidden jewels and amazing talent.  There just isn't enough help available to nurture and cultivate it.  Many judge today's youth and even count them out, but we choose to help.

According to numerous reports, Louisiana consistently leads the nation in murders (for 31 years straight).  Louisiana is also ranked amongst the poorest.  There is a direct correlation between poverty and violence.  Monroe, Louisiana is ranked in the top five most dangerous cities in Louisiana.  To myself and others, that is an urgent call to help.

We're getting as many of the youth in the Parkview area, involved in sports/activities as we can for the Summer and beyond.   We want them to have a chance at life, success and being on the positive side of statistical reports.  It's been time to step up.  We can't keep crying and shaking our heads, fearing what's next and dreading the news.

We should all care about what happens to our neighbors; for we are commanded by our Creator, to love our neighbors.  We all need somebody, and right now, our youth desperately needs us.

Please, be a part of this positive change.  Don't just discuss in disgust.  Help!  Imagine these children looking back, after they've made it out, pulling others out.  Imagine the feeling of knowing communities are behind you, and people are cheering you on.

We never know how life may turn out for us or those we love.   Many of our youth think nobody cares.  Let's show them differently.  Let's BE the difference.

Thank you!!
