Water for Somalia

Hi my name is Ahmed Gass , Abu Munthir, and I have grown up in Somalia and have seen firsthand how the water supply is dwindling.

I am 48 years old and currently living in the UK and am blessed that I don’t have to worry about whether or not I can drink water but I can't help but think of the people who haven't been given the same opportunities as me where I am from,Somalia is one of the poorest countries in the Horn of Africa. It is

severely water stressed and is characterized as arid and semi-arid with

sparse rainfall. On the other hand, dry seasons and water shortages have

been a constant problem in somalia ,There is a scarcity of water and

prolonged severe droughts especially in rural areas of Somalia.

AWSANE is a town in Sanaag region of Somalia with limited access to

safe water. People fetch water from a distance of 40km with very high

water tariffs more than 4$ per one barrel of 200L of water.

This project is proposed to focus on this drought prone area with the

utilization of groundwater resources.

The project will be developed with the implementation of new water

supply system in targeted area in sanaag region with more potential

groundwater source rather than surface water harvesting.

The project is geared towards building resilience and sustainable livelihoods

for the targeted rural communities in the target areas.

Estimated number of beneficiaries is 3000 households of town residents, and other 2000 nomads living in the dry surrounding areas of the town.

Project Objective

- To provide sustainable water supply and sanitation services.

- To reduce the effects of prolonged droughts.

- To deliver palatable water type for the community

- To improve the livelihood of the targeted communities.

- To increase the production of livestock and promote agro- pastoralism activities.

Key Project Activities

- Performing detailed hydrogeological and geophysical survey assessment for siting the well.

- Drilling and equipping of one well.

- Construction of storage tank, water kiosk and animal troughs

- Construction of caretaker and generator room

Expected results

- It’s expected to provide sustainable water supply solutions for AWSANE town and the surrounding nomads.

- The production of livestock will be enhanced.

- The effect of droughts to rural communities will be highly

reduced and managed.

- The livelihood of the targeted communities will improve in general.
