Hi, my name is Dani Cohen, and I’m reaching out with a vulnerable ask that’s deeply important to me. After nearly 25 years of living with gender dysphoria — and the painful mismatch between my chest and my gender identity — I have finally scheduled my gender-affirming top surgery for October 14th, 2025.

This surgery will be life-changing. It will bring me freedom from the constant discomfort and distress I feel every single day, and allow me to finally feel at home in my own body. For me, top surgery isn’t just a medical procedure — it’s a critical step toward mental and emotional well-being, toward autonomy, and toward joy.

Unfortunately, my Medicaid insurance has denied coverage for this medically necessary procedure, despite an appeal being submitted. There’s no guarantee they will respond before my surgery date — and if they don’t, I will not be unable to file any kind of retroactive claim. This leaves me with no other option but to pay out of pocket.

The total cost of the surgery is $12,200, and the full amount is due by October 13th — the day before surgery.

Since University Hospitals offers no financing options, I am planning to put $5,000 on a credit card to help cover the total cost. But I’m terrified of the financial burden that could follow. That’s why I’m asking for your help.

My fundraising goal is $5,000 — to help me pay off the portion of debt on my credit card and move forward without being financially crushed by the cost of affirming my identity.
