After nearly 25 years of living with gender dysphoria — and the painful mismatch between my chest and my gender identity — I have finally scheduled my gender-affirming top surgery for <strong>October 14th, 2025</strong>.

<div>This surgery will be <em>life-changing</em>. It will bring me freedom from the constant discomfort and distress I feel every single day, and allow me to finally feel at home in my own body. For me, top surgery isn’t just a medical procedure — it’s a critical step toward mental and emotional well-being, toward autonomy, and toward joy.

<div>Unfortunately, my Medicaid insurance has <strong>denied coverage</strong> for this medically necessary procedure, despite an appeal being submitted. There’s no guarantee they will respond before my surgery date — and if they don’t, I will not be unable to file any kind of retroactive claim. This leaves me with no other option but to pay <strong>out of pocket</strong>.

<div><strong>The total cost of the surgery is $12,200, and the full amount is due by October 13th — the day before surgery.</strong>

<div>Since University Hospitals offers no financing options, I am planning to put <strong>$5,000 on a credit card</strong> to help cover the total cost. But I’m terrified of the financial burden that could follow. That’s why I’m asking for your help.
