Over this summer, I’ve been given the incredible opportunity to volunteer in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, where I will be teaching English and maths in local schools, as well as helping run community classes.
Sri Lanka is currently facing a serious education crisis, particularly in rural areas. Many communities are cut off from education due to significant inequalities between rural and urban regions. This has led to a shortage of teachers, as well as limited access to basic resources and infrastructure in schools.
One of the most important aspects of this project is teaching English. In Sri Lanka, English is not taught as part of the curriculum and the majority of children have little to no access to learn English unless they are exposed to it at home. Without these opportunities, it becomes much harder to pursue further education or access better job prospects. Being able to speak English can open doors and give them a chance to break the cycle of poverty.
Through volunteering at Akurala School and the community classes in Galagoda, I will be able to contribute to improving the lives of the children and allow them the opportunity to have a better start in life which they might otherwise not have access to.
Any donations, no matter how small, would mean so much to me and will go directly towards making this opportunity possible. Thank you so much for your support.
