Volunteering in Lima

¡Hola!
Soy Ally and I’m the big cheese of an admin workforce spanning a few Emergency Departments, however, still not a doctor yet. In both my personal and professional life, I am deeply committed to having as much of a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of communities abroad as I do my own. Throughout June I will be providing Community Support in urban and rural communities of Lima, Peru and I need your help!
- Babies born in Peru face an immediate coin flip of sufficient access to food or chronic malnutrition as over half of Peru’s population lack consistent access to enough food to maintain a healthy and active life.
- After a 50/50 shot at a healthy life or stunted growth and irreversible cognitive damage, access to health care and education will be limited with no shortages of preventable respiratory and waterborne diseases due to high pollution and contaminated water supplies.
- If you're really fortunate and have a vagina, complex social hierarchies with an emphasis on male dominance and social stigma will cultivate an environment in which intimate partner violence rates exist at 3 times the world average and femicide remains steadily on the rise.
- If you then survive a male-to-female ratio of suicide of 1:3, DV, SA, and homelessness, your top 5 leading causes of death are preventable diseases, given little to no thought in our world of accessible and adequate health care.
- Poverty driven rapid urban growth and rural-to-urban migration has resulted in homelessness statistics within the top 20 worldwide causing a clash of two endless seas of people seeking security meeting somewhere in the middle, pitching a tent, and calling it home.
- Young people living in pueblos jóvenes will experience a higher risk of abuse, exploitation, and gang violence juxtaposed with no access to education and healthcare.
I will be working in a Women's refuge to support the provision of safe shelter, essential care, and long-term support to vulnerable women, children, and teenagers suffering from homelessness. I will also be working within Olla Comúnes, 'shared pot' soup kitchens, to coordinate the investment of money, time and labour and feeding thousands of individuals living in extreme poverty daily.
My work and donations will cover and contribute to the costs of housing, food, personal hygiene products and medical care. I will coordinate education programs in English language, physical, sexual and personal health, and skills in independence and self-esteem to break cycles of trauma and poverty and reinforce an environment where women, children and families can heal, grow, and thrive.
Please do not feel obliged to donate, you have already done your part in reading this and considering the challenges you could have easily faced if you had been born elsewhere. However, if you are interested in helping out - even the smallest of contributions can create an incredible impact on someone's life and will be deeply appreciated. Here's some food for thought in AUD:
1 tube of toothpaste is $3
1 packet of sanitary napkins (pads) is $5
1 box of 32 tampons is $7
1 week's worth of cold and flu medications is $8
1 box of antibiotics is $13
1 kg of tomatoes is $2
1 kg of potatoes is $2
1 loaf of bread is $2
500 grams of chicken breast is $3
1 kg of apples is $3
1 dozen eggs is $5
1 litre of milk is $3
Though we may exist thousands of kilometres away, we are all connected, and all possess the right to a safe and secure life. Through this connection we can continue to be made great by our compassion, hope and generosity.
Gracias por su tiempo y consideración, see you soon!
