Volunteer Trip To Maui

Jennie and I traveling to Maui from Sept 8th to 18th. Lahaina holds a special place in my heart because in lived there as a child. We lived, worked, went to school in the areas that burned. The Maui fires have the highest death toll in 100 years and there are still over 800 people missing. People are without homes, jobs, and recovery is even more complicated by the fact that this happened on an island.
I have been in contact with medical providers on Maui who are in desperate need of nurses. There are also grass roots volunteer groups that are in desperate need of people like Jennie and I. At this time we aren’t in a place to fund the whole trip and purchase supplies for victims on island. That is why we are asking for your help. We want to be able to see a family or organization with X need then go deliver it to them.
We have been able to cover our travel fees as of 8/21.
1. The cost of our travel:
- Approx $1,800 on housing<— update: as of 8/22 we secured a room at a local hostel.
- Plane tickets were $900 ish with all the fun airline fees
- Car rental 300ish
- Food at least 500
- Pet sitter will be... I don't even want to know what it will cost on short notice
- We absolutely plan on contributing but wanted to be transparent about the cost of trip
- Rest assured-we are not planning on going on a vacation. We will be spending our days doing everything we can for the local people
2. Needs for fire victims
- We are primarily fundraising so we can help the local people
- We have already been doing the "adopt a family MAUI" program to help families in need
- There has been a need for for volunteers to make trips to Costco and the grocery store for everything from water, to formula, to diapers, to generators.
- We plan on packing bags (some airlines are waiving extra bag fees) with things that are hard to get on the island.
- I have been talking with one of the nurses who is organizing local support and she will give me a list of what is needed most on island.

Edited to add: If you don’t like GoFundMe. I’ve been keeping a list of legitimate organization to send money to. I have lots of ideas who to donate to if this makes you nervous. We don’t care how you support the people! We can connect you in a way that you are most comfortable.
