Sydney Thornton- Ghana Building Healthy Villages
Donation protected
My name is Sydney Thornton and I am a rising senior attending Maury High School in the Medical and Health Specialty Program. I have over 800 volunteer hours with Norfolk General Hospital working in the Emergency Department- Level I Trauma Unit. I also work at NASA- Langley Air and Space Center as a museum educator.
My goal is to raise the money required to travel to Ghana for two weeks during the summer of 2019 with Global Leadership Adventures (GLA).
The focus of this trip is building healthy villages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewwwmom4qlQ
I would have the opportunity to shadow doctors from remote villages to learn how they practice public health and we will work to create a number of Eco-toilets which convert waste to fertilizer. This critical infrastructure not only provides a way to organically feed the crops but also drastically cuts down on the spread of communicable diseases.
I believe this experience will help me to become a stronger leader, learn more about my responsibility to the world on a larger scale through a focus on empathy and respect for other cultures. I believe this will shape my future decisions with my career in medicine and public health.
Without your assistance I would not be able to be a part of this enriching and lifesaving project. My passion is medicine and public health and I would be grateful for the opportunity. In order to meet the deadlines for GLA, I will need to raise the money by Feb 10th, 2019.
Thank you all for helping and believing in me.
