Villanova Nursing DR Trip 2018

Donation protected
Hello! In October 2018, eight students from Villanova University’s College of Nursing will be traveling to La Romana, Dominican Republic along with two nursing faculty members. While there, we will be collaborating with the doctors, dentists, and interpreters of the Good Samaritan Hospital to deliver healthcare to the Haitian immigrants that are living in the Dominican Republic. Many Haitians migrate to the Dominican Republic to find work, and the majority live in rural communities very deep within the sugar cane fields where they work. Most have little or no health care access, so our mission is to bring healthcare to as many Haitian immigrants as we can through our mobile healthcare clinics. Our goal is to see as many as 100 people each day. As nursing students, we will be performing health assessments, dispensing medications, providing health promotion, and delivering education on common chronic conditions in the DR such as diabetes, malnutrition, and hypertension.

However, limited healthcare is not the only problem within this population, so we also will be working to maintain long-term international relationships and to establish sustainable solutions to problems such as inadequate food supply and unsafe water. In order for our group to purchase and provide the necessary supplies for our clinics, your financial support would be greatly appreciated. We are very passionate about improving the health and knowledge in the community of La Romana, and we hope you will consider helping us in our mission.
