VIHI - Socially Inclusive Theatre

Hi everyone :)

My name is Cassandra and I am a fresh graduate from the University of Tasmania, representing my production crew in the VIHI Theatre Experience. The reason why I am raising funds is for an opportunity to bring a socially inclusive theatrical production from Launceston, Tasmania to Queensland at the end of September.

In February this year, I embarked on a journey to investigate what it takes to create socially inclusive theatrical productions. I am personally very inspired by my experiences with Dialogue-in-the-Dark Singapore and through personal encounters with Hearing Impaired friends.

Over the course of two months, I rehearsed intensely with a small cast of 4 members to put up a short one act play in 3 different versions - firstly in total darkness, secondly in total silence and lastly, in a 'regular' theatre form with full lights and sounds.

The aim of my project was to allow people with little or no impairments experience the worlds of those who are visually or hearing impaired for a short period of time. Every individual left the theatre room with a deeper understanding of how someone with a disability might find it challenging to experience or enjoy something so simple that we often take for granted. They were also challenged to work through their initial fears of the dark and feelings of lostness, as well as to make full use of all their other senses to make sense of their surroundings.

This project provided not just a theatrical experience, but also an educational experience. My cast members and I sincerely hope that the audience members will be inspired to make a social change in the world, one step at a time.

A detailed documentation and responses of those who have experienced the first showing of the project can be found here: http://vihitheatreproject.weebly.com

Mid this year, I applied to the Festival of Australian Student Theatre (FAST) and was successful. As such, my cast members and I have been invited to fly over to Queensland to put up this production.

More details about FAST can be found here: http://fastfestival.org

This is an excellent opportunity to allow more people to experience losing their senses firsthand, and to encourage them to make a social change.

We are currently in the midst of raising funds to namely cover expenses in these three areas:

1. Flights

2. Accommodation

3. Public Liability Insurance

We are hoping to raise between $6800 to $7000 to cover these costs for all 5 of us. We are also hoping to raise these funds by early September so as to purchase the needed flights and accommodation.

As fresh graduates and current students, my cast members and I are facing financial obstacles in making this opportunity a possibility. We therefore, appeal to all of you to join us in helping to change the world through providing support.

We are immensely thankful for any form or amount of support in making this opportunity become a reality for us. This project will not only change our lives, but will also challenge and touch those who step into this production with us as they experience firsthand what it means to live a different way. Once again, thank you all so much.
