There is a pressing need in Ecuador to address sexual assault. 60% of women are victims of gender-based violence, and reported cases of sexual abuse of adolescents have risen 55% in the last year. The all-too-common occurrences of sexual violence in the daily lives of Ecuadorians are prompting many survivors to look for support.  Yet currently, there are no trainings available for victim advocates in Ecuador.

To help address this urgent need, a group of passionate women have started an organization called S.A.L.V.A.S. (Sistema de Apoyo y Liberación para Víctimas de Abuso Sexual—System of Support and Liberation for Victims of Sexual Assault). Our group includes mothers, social workers, lawyers, activists, artists, anthropologists, and psychologists bound together by their strong desire to help end sexual violence in Ecuador. We are in the process of incorporating as an Ecuadorian NGO and acquiring 501(c)(3) status in the United States.

Our organization is in its infancy, and we need your help to get to the next stage! Our immediate goal is to equip a core group of victim advocates with the knowledge, skills, and professional connections that will enable them to start building a network of victim support services in Ecuador.

The 40-hour victim advocate training at the Rape Recovery Center in Salt Lake City, Utah is a nationally recognized two-week program that prepares and certifies participants to conduct effective community advocacy and outreach and compassionately respond to victims in crisis.

Receiving the 40-hour training will give the women of S.A.L.V.A.S. the skills they need to serve sexual assault survivors in Ecuador. This indispensable cross-cultural exchange of knowledge and support will strengthen our advocates and, by working closely with Rape Recovery Center staff, we will be able to bring their proven methods to Ecuador and begin the first of many local trainings in Fall 2019.

Allow us to send eight advocates to attend the training in the United States. These women have a long history of engagement in the fight against sexual violence and have undergone a rigorous selection process that shows them to be caring advocates and passionate leaders, dedicated to the long-term goals of S.A.L.V.A.S. and ending sexual violence in Ecuador. 

With international flights, meals, and training fees, it will cost $1,500 for each advocate to attend the training. Each woman has put forth $500 of her own money (a great sacrifice, as the average salary of our group participants, is $570/month). Lodging in Salt Lake City has already been provided by an anonymous donor. Your donation will not only help our dedicated advocates to acquire vital training but will have an enormous impact on the sexual assault survivors S.A.L.V.A.S will be able to support in the future.

Hay una necesidad apremiante de abordar el abuso sexual en Ecuador. El 60% de las mujeres son víctimas de violencia de género, y los casos denunciados de abuso sexual de adolescentes aumentaron un 55% en el último año. Los sucesos demasiado comunes de violencia sexual en la vida cotidiana de los ecuatorianos están impulsando a muchos sobrevivientes a buscar apoyo. Sin embargo, en la actualidad, no hay capacitaciones disponibles para asesoría de víctimas comunitarias en Ecuador.

Para ayudar a abordar esta necesidad urgente, un grupo de mujeres comprometidas ha iniciado una organización llamada S.A.L.V.A.S. (Sistema de Apoyo y Liberación para Víctimas de Abuso Sexual). Nuestro grupo incluye madres, trabajadoras sociales, abogadas, activistas, artistas, antropólogas, y psicólogas unidas por el gran deseo de ayudar a poner fin a la violencia sexual en el Ecuador. Estamos en el proceso de incorporarnos como una ONG ecuatoriana y adquirir el estado 501(c)(3) en los Estados Unidos.

Carolina Andrea Caza Terán

Caro es abogada de profesión y activista de derechos humanos. Durante la carrera de derecho tuvo la oportunidad de realizar prácticas pre-profesionales en el Centro de Asistencia Legal Gratuito de la universidad. En este espacio tuvo la oportunidad de brindar asesoría legal a mujeres y adolescentes víctimas de violencia. Este acercamiento la hizo pensar sobre los déficits existentes en la formación de los abogadxs. En el 2017, una vez graduada como abogada, empezó su maestría en FLACSO en género y desarrollo. Desde la academia, junto con tres compañeras crearon la colectiva Doloreyuk. Por este medio tuvo la oportunidad de asesorar y redireccionar a mujeres, adolescentes y niñxs en situación de movilidad humana víctimas de violencia sexual a los diferentes lugares de atención integral. También realizó una línea base sobre las debilidades y fortalezas de lxs abogadxs de niñas, niños y adolescentes víctimas de violencia sexual junto a UNICEF en nueve ciudades del Ecuador. El trabajo de campo realizado fue bastante duro, se pudo verificar la naturalización de la violencia, la falta de educación sexual y de mecanismos estatales para frenar de raíz la problemática. A partir del 2018, Doloreyuk se fusiona con Insurrección Feminista, colectiva que busca generar conciencia de género por medio de talleres. Además, gracias a la variedad de profesiones de sus integrantes, ha sido posible brindar un asesoramiento y patrocinio integral a víctimas de violencia de género. Actualmente, se encuentra finalizando su trabajo de campo, las líneas de investigación que maneja son: estado, sistema penal, y violencia sexual infantil.

Caro is a lawyer by profession and a human rights activist. During her law studies, she had the opportunity to do pre-professional internships at the university’s Free Legal Assistance Center. In this space, she was able to provide legal advice to women and adolescents who are victims of violence. This approach made her think about the existing deficits in the training of lawyers. In 2017, upon graduating as a lawyer, she began her masters in gender and development at FLACSO. Through the academia, along with three colleagues, she created the collective Doloreyuk, through which she could advocate for and redirect women, children, and adolescents in situations of human mobility who are victims of sexual violence to different locations so that they may receive comprehensive care. Working UNICEF, she also conducted a baseline study in nine cities in Ecuador on the weaknesses and strengths of the lawyers specializing in children and adolescents who were victims of sexual violence. While fieldwork was quite difficult, it made it possible to verify the naturalization of violence, the lack of sexual education, and of state mechanisms to stop the root of the problem. As of 2018, Doloreyuk merged with Feminist Insurrection, a collective that seeks to generate gender awareness through workshops. Also, thanks to the variety of professions of its members, it has been possible to provide comprehensive advice and sponsorship to victims of gender violence. Currently, she is finishing her fieldwork, the research lines she investigates are state, the penal system, and child sexual violence.


Celia Cabrera Torres
"Educate. Protect. Care. No more child sexual abuse!"

Involucrada activamente desde muy joven en programas de voluntariado en asesoría y apoyo a sobrevivientes de abuso y violencia sexual, Celia es una abogada de profesión por la Universidad Central del Ecuador, especializada en Promoción y Protección de Derechos Humanos por el College Universitaire Henry Dunant en Suiza y magister en relaciones internacionales y diplomacia con mención en política exterior. Ella tiene experiencia en voluntariado y trabajo con instituciones públicas y privadas así como con organismos nacionales e internacionales en protección a grupos vulnerables y con grupos de apoyo,  especialmente con niños, niñas y mujeres víctimas de conflicto armado en la región, migración forzada, refugios, y sobrevivientes de violencia sexual.

Ha realizado varias investigaciones y publicaciones en temas de género, violencia sexual y derechos sexuales y reproductivos. Actualmente, es co-fundadora de “Garabateando” una organización enfocada a la estimulación temprana y masaje infantil que utiliza éstas y otras técnicas para brindar soporte y alivio a sobrevivientes de violencia sexual y que brinda prevención, asesoría y acompañamiento legal en casos de violencia. Involved actively from a very young age in volunteer programs in advocacy and support for survivors of sexual abuse and violence, Celia is a lawyer by profession at the Central University of Ecuador. She has a specialization in Promotion and Protection of Human Rights from the Henry Dunant University College in Switzerland and with a Masters Degree in International Relations and Diplomacy with a mention in Foreign Policy. She has experience in volunteering and working with public and private institutions as well as with national and international organizations in the protection of vulnerable groups and with support groups, especially with children and women who are victims of armed conflict in the region, forced migration, refugees, and survivors of sexual violence.

She has carried out several research projects and publications on gender issues, sexual violence, and sexual and reproductive rights. Currently, she is the co-founder of "Garabateando" an organization focused on early stimulation and infant massaging that uses these and other techniques to provide support and relief to survivors of sexual violence and provides prevention, advocacy, and legal assistance in cases of abuse. She enjoys reading and loves to travel.
 

Cristina Alexandra Rosero Fuentes

Cristina es ecuatoriana, con 32 años de edad, licenciada en Derecho, Economía, y Gestión con Mención en Economía y Gestión (Licence Droit, Économie, Gestion, Mention Économie – Gestion) por la universidad Escuela Politécnica Nacional (Quito) y la Universidad Jean Monnet (Saint Etienne – Francia). Es actriz de vocación, con formación en teatro para cine, video, y televisión, producción cinematográfica, pantomima, y mimo.

Actualmente trabaja para el gobierno del Ecuador como Especialista de Compras Inclusivas en el Servicio Nacional de Contratación Pública. Es madre de Dana Isabella, es militante feminista y activista por la defensa de las mujeres víctimas de violencia de género.

Vicepresidenta y fundadora del Colectivo Feminista 8M NINA WARMI, organización que brinda acompañamiento a mujeres que han sobrevivido a la violencia de género y a las familias de mujeres víctimas de femicidios. Adicionalmente, realiza acompañamiento particular a mujeres víctimas de violencia sexual.

De igual manera, a través del teatro como trinchera busca visibilizar y sensibilizar sobre la realidad de las mujeres víctimas de violencia de género en todas sus manifestaciones y, a la vez, generar el empoderamiento femenino en esta continua lucha por la defensa de los derechos y la equidad de género. Forma parte del elenco teatral de la obra mundial “Los Monólogos de la Vagina” en Ecuador, y es organizadora y productora del festival anual “Mujeres de Fuego”, que agrupa a mujeres artistas feministas del país que exponen muestras al público en el ámbito del teatro, danza, poesía, y artes plásticas; levantando una sola voz de denuncia, resistencia, y empoderamiento.

Cristina is Ecuadorian, 32 years old, with a degree in Law, Economics, and Management with a minor in Economics and Management (License Droit, Économie, Gestion, Mention Économie - Gestion) from the Universidad Politécnica Nacional (Quito) and the Jean Monnet University (Saint Etienne - France). She is an actress by vocation, with training in theater for film, video, and television, film production, pantomime, and mime.

She currently works for the government of Ecuador as an Inclusive Purchasing Specialist in the National Public Procurement Service. She is the mother of Dana Isabella, a militant feminist, and activist for the defense of women who are victims of gender violence.

She is Vice-president and founder of the 8M Feminist Collective NINA WARMI, an organization that provides support to women who have survived gender violence and to the families of victims of femicide. Additionally, it provides individualized support to women who are victims of sexual violence.

In the same way, through the theater as a tool, she seeks to make visible and raise awareness about the reality of women who are victims of gender violence in all its manifestations and, at the same time, generate women's empowerment in the ongoing struggle for the defense of rights and gender equity. She is part of the theatrical cast of the internationally produced play "The Vagina Monologues" in Ecuador, and is the organizer and producer of the annual festival "Women of Fire," which brings together female feminist artists from across country who publicly exhibit in the fields of theater, dance, poetry, and visual arts, raising a single voice of denunciation, resistance, and empowerment.

Karina nació en Quito, Ecuador, su familia es de Azogues. Primero estudió una Ingeniería en Administración de Empresas Hoteleras, sin embargo, después de ser voluntaria en el Servicio Ignaciano de Voluntariado (SIGVOL) y participar en el Kibbutz Program Center (KPC ISRAEL), decidió cambiar su carrera y estudió Abogacía en la Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja y posteriormente una Especialización en Derechos Humanos en la Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar. Desde donde se vinculó para su trabajo en una Organización No Gubernamental de atención a niños, niñas y adolescentes sin cuidado parental y que en varios de los casos habían sido víctimas de abuso sexual. Actualmente es miembro de la Junta Cantonal de Protección de Derechos de Niñez y Adolescencia del Cantón Quito, entidad que dispone medidas de protección en favor de niños, niñas y adolescentes que han sido vulnerados o existe el riesgo que sean vulnerados en sus derechos. Disfruta de la naturaleza, su mascota, y de tomar clases de baile, especialmente de salsa.

Karina was born in Quito, Ecuador, and her family is from Azogues. First she studied Engineering in Hotel Business Management, however, after volunteering at the Ignatian Volunteer Service (SIGVOL) and participating in the Kibbutz Program Center (KPC ISRAEL), she decided to change her career and studied law at the Private Technical University of Loja with later a specialization in Human Rights at the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar. From there, she was linked to her work in a Non-Governmental Organization for the care of children and adolescents without parental care, and whom in several the cases had been victims of sexual abuse. She is currently a member of the Cantonal Board for the Protection of Rights of Children and Adolescents for the canton of Quito, an organization that provides protective measures for children and adolescents who have had or are at risk having their rights violated. She enjoys nature, her pet, and taking dance classes, especially salsa.


 
Margarita Ron Ordóñez

Margarita ha trabajado durante 10 años con población en situación de movilidad humana, especialmente población refugiada. Durante este tiempo ha proporcionado apoyo psicológico y atención a sobrevivientes de violencia basada en género, tortura, y población que ha sufrido graves vulneraciones a sus derechos fundamentales. Así también, ha podido liderar equipos de trabajo para la atención oportuna en situaciones de emergencia, ha formado parte de procesos de capacitación para la correcta atención a población en condición de vulnerabilidad y ha desarrollado estrategias de trabajo comunitario para la generación de procesos protectores para sobrevivientes y mitigación de situaciones de discriminación y xenofobia. Margarita es graduada en Psicología Clínica, por la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, su posgrado lo realizó en la Universidad Andina Simón Bolivar, obteniendo el título de Especialista en Derechos Humanos y actualmente, se encuentra cursando una Maestría en Intervención interdisciplinaria en Violencia de Género en la Universidad Internacional de Valencia. Se desempeña como Coordinadora Nacional del Programa Psicosocial en una organización sin fines de lucro que brinda asistencia humanitaria en Ecuador. Margarita cree en el poder transformador de la lucha colectiva, en la generación de cambios globales con pequeñas acciones que permitan reconocernos como sujetos de derechos, en el trabajo mancomunado para un beneficio común, en el disfrute de una vida sin violencia, y la acción de la palabra como principal herramienta de liberación.

Margarita has worked for 10 years with populations undergoing human mobility, especially refugees. During this time, she has provided psychological support and attention to survivors of gender-based violence, torture, and populations that have suffered severe violations of their fundamental rights. Also, she has been able to lead work teams for timely attention in emergencies, has been part of training processes for attention to vulnerable populations and has developed community work strategies for the generation of protective processes for sexual assault survivors and mitigation of situations of discrimination and xenophobia. Margarita graduated with a degree in Clinical Psychology, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. She carried out her postgraduate studies at the Simón Bolivar Andean University, obtaining the title of Specialist in Human Rights and she is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Intervention in Gender Violence from the International University of Valencia. She is the National Coordinator of the Psychosocial Program in a non-profit organization that provides humanitarian assistance in Ecuador. Margarita believes in the transforming power of collective struggle, in the creation of global changes with small actions that allow us to recognize ourselves as subjects of rights, in joint work for a common benefit, in the enjoyment of a life without violence, and the action of the word as the main tool of liberation.



Carmen Marisol Rodríguez Pérez
"Denaturalize violence to respect life. End sexual violence!"

Marisol nació en Quito, el 6 de enero de 1969. Fue hija única, desde que tenía 8 años se rebeló a los mandatos machistas que determinaban que el lugar de las mujeres era la cocina. Estudió Antropología en la Universidad Católica y al terminar en 1994 se casó y trasladaron con su esposo a vivir por 5 años en Coca (Amazonía ecuatoriana) donde trabajaron en diferentes organizaciones. Allí nació su primera hija Manuela y más tarde, Camila. Trabajó con mujeres kichwas y mestizas en temas de género y violencia intrafamiliar. Gestó la Fundación Salud Amazónica y la Fundación Ayllu Huarmicuna – Mujeres y Familia e implementó la Oficina de Apoyo a la Mujer y la Familia (OAMF), antecedente de la Comisaría de la Mujer y la Familia en Coca, donde atendió a víctimas de violencia intrafamiliar que incluían violencia física, psicológica, sexual, y patrimonial. En 1998 gracias al impacto positivo de la OAMF, al fundarse la nueva Provincia de Orellana, se creó la Comisaría de la Mujer y la Familia. Para entonces por motivos familiares tuvo que regresar a Quito, pero las socias de la Fundación continuaron e implementaron la Casa de Acogida “Paula”.

En Quito, mientras esperaba a su tercer hijo Joaquín hizo Estudios de Género en la FLACSO y trabajó en la Fundación Casa Refugio Matilde coordinando el albergue para mujeres, niños y niñas afectados por violencia intrafamiliar. Después, seguió trabajando freelance en temas ligados a la violencia de género, derechos colectivos e interculturalidad, lo que hace hasta la actualidad. En 2007, obtuvo un Diplomado en Políticas Públicas y Manejo de los Recursos Naturales, luego estudió una maestría en Antropología en la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO- Ecuador). Desde 2013 forma parte del Colectivo de Antropólogas del Ecuador, una organización que se dedica a defender a los pueblos indígenas aislados, los derechos colectivos, y los derechos de las mujeres.

Marisol was born in Quito, on January 6, 1969. She was an only child, and since she was 8 years old, she rebelled against the machista mandates that determined that a women's place was the kitchen. She studied Anthropology at Catholic University, and when she finished in 1994, she got married and moved with her husband to live for 5 years in Coca (in the Ecuadorian Amazon) where they worked in different organizations. There her first daughter Manuela was born and later, Camila. She worked with Kichwa and mestizo women on issues of gender and intrafamilial violence. She managed the Amazon Health Foundation and the Ayllu Huarmicuna Foundation (Women and Family) and implemented the Office of Support for Women and the Family (OAMF), an antecedent of the Women and Family Police Station, in Coca, where she assisted victims of domestic violence which included physical, psychological, sexual, and patrimonial abuse. In 1998, thanks to the positive impact of the OAMF, when the new Province of Orellana was founded, the Women and Family Police Station was created. By then, for family reasons, she had to return to Quito, but the members of the Foundation continued and implemented the "Paula" Shelter.

In Quito, while she was awaiting her third son, Joaquín, she studied Gender Studies in FLACSO, and she worked in the Casa Refugio Matilde Foundation, coordinating the shelter for women and children affected by intrafamily violence. After that, she continued working freelance on issues related to gender violence, collective rights, and interculturality, which she does to the present. In 2007, she obtained a diploma in Public Policies and Natural Resources Management; then she studied a Master's Degree in Anthropology at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO-Ecuador). Since 2013, she is part of the Collective of Anthropologists of Ecuador, an organization dedicated to defending isolated indigenous peoples, collective rights, and women's rights.

María José inició su experiencia en la prevención y atención de casos de violencia sexual en 2012. Como psicóloga clínica brindó atención a mujeres diversas y se encontró con diferentes escenarios caracterizados por la violencia, las injusticias sociales, las violaciones a los derechos fundamentales y altos niveles de desigualdad entre mujeres y hombres sobrevenidos en ámbitos familiares, educativos, laborales, y sociales. La naturalización social de la violencia y de la desigualdad, la llevaron a cuestionar la estructura sociocultural en la cual se educó y se encaminó a los estudios de género y desarrollo.

María José ha trabajado como voluntaria apoyando a la población LGBTI en la prevención y atención de todas las formas de violencia basada en género y en procesos de empoderamiento e integración social. Desde 2015, trabaja con población refugiada, con migrantes vulnerables, víctimas de violencia sexual y tortura. Apoya en procesos de prevención, atención y remisión de casos de violencia y favorece a la integración local de personas en situación de vulnerabilidad.

En su tiempo libre, María José disfruta viajar, leer, visitar los museos, le gustan los eventos culturales, las presentaciones artísticas, el teatro y la danza. Ella disfruta caminar bajo la lluvia y pintar.

María José started her experience in the prevention and treatment of cases of sexual violence in 2012. As a clinical psychologist, she offered attention to diverse women and found different scenarios characterized by violence, social injustices, violations of fundamental rights and high levels of inequality between women and men in the family, educational, labor, and social spheres. The social naturalization of violence and inequality led her to question the sociocultural structure in which she was educated and directed her to gender and development studies.

María José has worked as a volunteer supporting the LGBTI population in the prevention and care of all forms of violence based on gender and in processes of empowerment and social integration. Since 2015, she has worked with refugee populations, with vulnerable migrants, victims of sexual violence, and torture. She supports processes of prevention, attention, and remission of cases of violence and in favor of the local integration of people in vulnerable situations.

In her free time, María José enjoys traveling, reading, visiting museums, and likes cultural events, artistic presentations, theater, and dance. She enjoys walking in the rain and painting.
