Veteran Doug Needs Your Help
Donation protected
I'm Doug an 81 year old 100% disabled Vietnam veteran. I lost my right leg in combat and nearly my left one too. I have had a total knee replacement in my left leg and I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes due to exposure to agent orange in Vietnam. Both my hips are arthritic.
On top of all that, a few weeks ago, I fell and broke the femur in my left leg. I have several months of rehab to go. I am not cleared to drive and my wife doesn't have a license as she is legally blind. The good news is that nearly all of my medical needs and expenses are covered by the Veterans Administration. Neighbors are helping take her to the store.
After loosing my leg, I became involved in adaptive sports and developing them nationwide, especially adaptive skiing, became my life's work. I loved it! I loved it so much that I continued it for thirteen years at no pay. And then, for the next 35 plus years I was underpaid. The result being that I was not able to create an "estate" capable of sustaining my wife very far beyond my time.
DON'T GET ME WRONG. I WOULDN'T CHANGE WHAT I DID IF I COULD!
Recent events have made me painfully aware of my mortality. Thus, this. My challenge is paying off our main debts so that Sheri (who is nearly 15 years younger) will be secure after my time. We are okay month to month and I try to pay a little extra each month on these major debts. If I make it 5 more years, I hope to have them paid off. These two major debts are:
1. Our house mortgage now $33,000 ($500/month) Taxes and Insurance would continue, so, this amount would pay off the principle and interest.
2. Our vehicle loan now $40,000 ($700/mo.)
My goal with this is to reduce that time.
