Coop Tulsa - Vernon AME Church Community Garden
The historic Vernon Chapel AME Church has teamed up with Cooperation Tulsa to create food sovereignty and to directly combat food insecurity for the community by building a produce garden. In March of 2020 Vernon began a food pantry program, God Provides Feeding, to combat the increase of hunger pains induced by the pandemic. A produce garden will allow people access to fresh, healthy food produced within their community. Multiple raised beds for fresh produce will be built at the church. Simultaneously, education as to how to build beds and grow produce at home will be offered to community members. In addition to the community garden, a pollination garden that borders the perimeter of the church yard will be installed. We are asking the community for funding for material such as cinder blocks, straw bales, soil etc.
The timeliness of this project could not feel more important, as the goal for our completion date is May 31st 2021, the 100th year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. We are grateful for the opportunity to create a literal and figurative symbol of reconciliation, reparations, and restitutions. We will meet every Friday until this project is complete and after each volunteering session we will be updating the Cooperation Tulsa page with progress.
