Val died peacefully at her home in Hough, Crewe, on Tuesday 30 September 2025.

Val moved to Grimsby in 1988 when she became Head teacher at Matthew Humberstone School, Cleethorpes. After her retirement in 1996, she was instrumental in setting up the North East Lincs Credit Union and was an active member of the Grimsby Catholic Church for several years after her confirmation Easter 1998.

Throughout her teaching career and her retirement, Val was passionate about social justice, the power of education to create opportunities, and the importance of empowering individuals to thrive in a supportive community. Val fell in love with Grimsby and the people who lived there. Her hope was for Grimsby to be her final home town, however, increasing age meant that she needed to move closer to family.

Centre4, based in the heart of Grimsby, is a community-focused organisation dedicated to fostering resilience, inclusion, and innovation, believing in empowering people to shape their
own lives while contributing to a stronger, more connected society. Through various projects, they aim to inspire growth, enhance wellbeing, and create opportunities for people of all
ages and abilities.

Donations to Centre4 in memory of Val will help others to carry on her passions in a place that she loved.
