<div>Val moved to Grimsby in 1988 when she became Head teacher at Matthew Humberstone School, Cleethorpes. After her retirement in 1996, she was instrumental in setting up the North East Lincs Credit Union and was an active member of the Grimsby Catholic Church for several years after her confirmation Easter 1998.

<div>Throughout her teaching career and her retirement, Val was passionate about social justice, the power of education to create opportunities, and the importance of empowering individuals to thrive in a supportive community. Val fell in love with Grimsby and the people who lived there. Her hope was for Grimsby to be her final home town, however, increasing age meant that she needed to move closer to family.
