My entire life changed on January 3, 2015 when I received a phone call stating that a family member had signed over their newborn baby to me. You can imagine the amount of overwhelming emotions that came over me, mostly consisting of fear, excitement, panic and shock. From that phone call I had exactly five hours to prepare for my initial CPS home verification visit and I vividly remember how I ran frantically throughout Target to purchase all of his necessities.
On January 5th when I was finally able to bring him home from the hospital I'll never forget how they handed me over this precious 6lb 9oz unnamed little boy (his legal name is "Baby Boy"). Nothing in my 20+ years of working with children could have ever prepared me for that moment. He quickly had my entire heart and it seemed so clear that God hand-picked us to be together.
In May 2015, after much research and council, I decided to become a licensed foster parent to gain further support for him. This decision has significantly helped me learn the legal process, as well as gain an incredible support system from the foster/adopt community.
Finally after 7 months and after multiple court hearings his parental rights were terminated in July 2015. Legally, there is a 90-day appeal period that CPS must honor before proceeding with the adoption process. After completing all of the hurdles that go along with the legal process we targeted adoption to be on November 21, 2015 which is Dallas County National Adoption Day. National Adoption Day is a collective, national effort to raise awareness for the thousands of children in foster care awaiting permanent and loving families. The fees for adoptions on this day are waived, which is a significant reason why this date was selected. Unfortuantely, I was informed this week that we are not going to be able to adopt on National Adoption Day due to a delay in transfering his file to the adoption worker.
This journey has been an emotional rollercoaster with so many highs and lows. Through it all we have experienced so much love and support from all of you that I could never thank you enough for. From your time, ceaseless prayers, babysitting, gifts, words of encouragement and everything in between; all of this has been a tremendous blessing to us.
I am humbly asking for your support one more time as I now have to quickly raise the finances to adopt him. The total cost will be $1,600 and this will cover the costs of his birth certificate, attorney fees, as well as his court document processing fee.
I cannot wait for the day our adoption is consummated and he is legally named Isaiah Thomas Gallegos and also legally made my son.
