Running for Steven: A Marathon of Memory, Love, and Strength

In March year, I’m running the Rome Marathon — not just for the miles, not for the medal, but for my brother, Steven.

Steven wasn’t just my brother — he was my best friend, my protector, my partner in all the dumb jokes and late-night talks that only siblings understand. His laugh could shake a room. His heart was wide open. And when life threw punches, he stood up — for himself, for me, for anyone who needed him.

Losing him left a space that will never be filled. It still hurts in ways I can’t fully put into words — but I’ve learned that love like that doesn’t just disappear. It echoes. It pushes you forward. It shows up in your lungs when you think you can’t breathe, in your legs when you think you can’t take another step.

That’s why I’m running through the streets of Rome — one of the world’s oldest cities, full of history, resilience, and memory — to honor Steven’s life and raise money for Compassion in Dying, a charity that helps people facing the end of life have more control, dignity, and choice.

In Steven’s final days, we saw how vital it is to feel supported, informed, and empowered. Compassion in Dying provides that lifeline to so many families, helping them navigate the most painful and personal of times with dignity and clarity. They give people something we all deserve: choice at the end of life.

Every mile I run in Rome is a mile for Steven — for the days we don’t get to share, for the laughs we don’t get to have, for the life he should still be living. This is how I carry him forward.

I’m not running away from grief. I’m running with it — with love, with memory, with purpose. And at the finish line, with the Colosseum behind me and Steven in my heart, I know he’ll be right there with me.
