Very early on a Monday morning, R* headed off to work in the dark. He planned to pick up all the groceries and diapers that his young wife, M*, and their sweet 5-month-old son would need for the week ahead on his way home from work. But 15 minutes later he called her with very bad news: He told her, in his Maya Q’eqchi’ language, that he would not be coming home that night at all. He had just been grabbed by federal immigration agents in Takoma Park.

Since then, their lives have been turned upside down. R is now being held at a detention center in a different state, far from his traumatized young family. He was his family's sole breadwinner. So M is now struggling to pay the bills without him, find a good lawyer, and somehow come up with the money they will need to pay legal fees for his November court hearing.

As of right now, they’re not even sure where that hearing will be. But his family fears his life will be in danger if he is deported to the country he fled. That means good legal counsel is critical to this family’s future.

While he is detained, his family urgently needs financial support to buy food and diapers, pay the rent, and make sure M can get the care she needs for her own outstanding health issue, as well as fund the legal costs before them.
