"Hello everyone, I’m reaching out during a really difficult time. After my longtime girlfriend of 27 years passed away from cancer in December 2024, I was left with nothing—no will, no insurance benefits, just our beloved African Grey Parrot Kato, who has been with me for almost 30 years. At the time, I was only receiving less than $1000 in Social Security and was unexpectedly burdened with bills she hadn’t paid, including a $400 water bill that took months to reduce. An agreement with my girlfriend’s cousin (who lives 1700 miles away and was supposed to cover the mortgage while I handled utilities) fell through. I was told just last week, with less than 30 days’ notice, that the house—where I was allowed to live rent-free as long as I cared for it—must be sold or it will go to auction. Neither the cousin nor the realtor informed me earlier, so now I am scrambling to find funds for moving expenses and a new place for Kato and me. Sadly, I had to re-home two of our dogs months ago, and two others passed away recently, so Kato is all I have left. My Social Security has just been raised to a little over $1100, but that all goes straight to bills and essentials for me and my parrot. I am doing my best to handle things, but this sudden eviction without notice has left me desperate and unsure of where to turn.
