Urgent Support for Immigrant Workers
Donation protected
Hello everyone, my name is Amy and I participate in mutual aid with the immigrant community in the DC area. I am planning to distribute these funds to people who are applying for their work permit, also known as Employment Authorization Document (EAD) or I-765.
The individuals and families I know are all trying to legally gain work to support their families and contribute to our society. However, work permit applications cost $475 per individual which makes this process difficult for a lot of folks. Furthermore, after the election, there is an increased urgency to apply for work permits as people fear it may be harder or more expensive to apply during the incoming administration.
I want to be clear that gaining a work permit does NOT offer a pathway to citizenship and or open the door to many other benefits that US citizens receive. However, it is vital for folks to support themselves and their families, especially here in the DC area with expensive rent and other high costs.
My plan is to start by offering $100 to each person who I assist with their EAD application. I am currently in touch with 10 people who want to apply ASAP. Depending on funds, I may be able to offset up to half of the cost for each application.
Immigrants have always made this country great. One way is their work in essential and often undervalued fields that keep this country running! Thank you so much for considering and please share with your communities. Happy holidays!
