Urgent: Queer South Asian Community Support
I remember being 19, and having to move out over-night because of the dangers of coming out to my South Asian family. For many years after, I struggled with precarious living situations, abusive relationships, and a lack of support because I was afraid to share my story. All because of my efforts to avoid shaming my family and to maintain the pretence of being a 'good' South Asian. The pain and suffering in many ways could have been prevented if I had been more connected and thought of asking for help from my Queer South Asian community.
Many of us have a story similar to this, and while many of us might have survived these spaces; I wonder how many more perhaps have not or are still struggling.
I am reaching out to you for your support today because my friend, Sonali (Alyy) Patel recently shared their own story of family violence, fear, and lack of support with me. Their courage was admirable, and I couldn't help but think how could we break this cycle of suffering, and allow for healing and community support.
As such, today, I am asking you to consider donating to support Sonali (Alyy)'s safety and survival in fleeing family violence, and to continue their trail-blazing advocacy work for our Queer South Asian Community. Their research has made a huge impact in bringing attention to the unique experiences of Queer South Asians. Sonali (Alyy) has also been the founder of the Queer South Asian Womxn's Network (QSAW) which has been instrumental in connecting members of Queer South Asian community and build capacity for community-led advocacy (https://www.instagram.com/QSAWnetwork).
Ultimately, I believe it is necessary for us as a community to support Sonali (Alyy)'s brilliance by making sure they are SAFE while advocating for our Queer South Asian diasporic community.
I am joined in this request by Sonali (Alyy)'s close friend, Pragya who has been an anchor during this challenging time.
We are stronger together, and I hope you will consider showing your support with a donation, a share, and/or a positive message for Sonali (Alyy).
Every bit of support makes a world of difference.
Thank you,
Julius
