Title: A Sense of Urgency in Housing Stability, Wellness and Community Advocacy for a Bay Area Native

Story: My name is Patrick Anderson, and I am a testament to resilience in the face of adversity. As an African American heterosexual male with Native American roots, and historical lineage in Oakland, I stand as part of the demographic most impacted by homelessness in Alameda County, California.

Throughout the pandemic and beyond, I’ve been an active voice in my community, serving on boards and committees such as Everyone Home’s Emerging Leaders Program, HUD’s Continuum of Care, EBHO’s (East Bay Housing Organization) Leadership Academy and by hosting a podcast on Spotify which serves as a means of inequities in community, wellness advocacy and public service announcements. My dedication has led me to a promising opportunity as a housing inspector, a role that resonates with my background & history in facilities management throughout Northern and Southern California.

However, my journey has been fraught with challenges. For over two years, I’ve battled health issues caused by mold in my current & previous home rentals, and now, I am compelled to leave and court-ordered (even after legal representation) by Tuesday, April 30th 2024. With my new job starting on May 13th, the urgency for stable, permanent housing is paramount.

For the past four years, my bicycle has been my faithful companion, carrying me through the streets of the East Bay Area, complemented by public transit and occasional rideshares. This mode of transportation, while economical, has exposed me to the elements, safety and health risks, which I must now mitigate as I recover.

I am reaching out for your support to secure a fresh start. The funds raised will go towards:

Moving expenses (storage, truck rental, hotel stay or deposit for a new and healthy living space)

A down payment on a new or used vehicle, providing safe and reliable transportation

Casual business attire & shoes required for my new position.

Goal: I aim to raise $7k to fund these necessities and transition smoothly into my new job without the shadow of homelessness looming over me.
