UPDATE: Finn's fever has come down a bit, and he's eating a little; the first time he's eaten since pulled from the shelter! We feel optimistic he's on his way to recovery!! Now we need to start preparing for when he leaves the hospital as he needs a place to recover with no other dogs as he can still shed the Distemper virus. Finn, a 3 yr old Great Pyrenees, was pulled from a kill shelter 7/31 by NGPR"s Oklahoma division, GPRO. He was obviously very ill and emaciated and immediately examined by our local vet which diagnosed him with Pneumonia. Within the next four days he's been at three different emergency hospitals where he eventually tested positive for Canine Distemper.
After two days in the local emerg hospital icu ward we had to make the choice to move him because his bill there had went from a $2,000 quote for his care to the actual bill being up to $5,500. Finn was transported to Oklahoma State University where they have continued to work to save him at a fraction of the cost of $800-$1,200 for three days of icu care.
The update last night was that Finn is holding stable, temp has dropped slightly, and he seems less lethargic, unfor his weight is down to 55 lbs! We are still optimistic that soon his body will have fought of this killer virus and and start recovering. Finn's total cost through today, 8/5, is approx $6,900, and we're desperate for sponsors for Finn as this will have a devastating impact on the rescue's ability to care for any other Pyrs in need.
