Hello, my name is Dina I'm 23 years old, and I want to tell you about my mother, Inaya.
My mother is 45 years old, but the war and displacement have made her look much older. She used to be a special education teacher in Gaza, but today she is living in a tent with us—her six children.
We share this tent with three other families (15 people in total), including my father’s younger sister and her five children, after her husband was killed in the war.
In just a short time, my mother lost her husband to illness in Egypt, her home, her job, and the life she once knew. I see her crying at night, but in the morning she forces herself to stay strong for us.
She has already survived three strokes from the stress, yet she continues to fight for us
We have been displaced eight times, carrying whatever little we own, wondering every time:
- Where will we go?
- Will we find clean water?
- How can we survive the burning sun of summer or the freezing rain of winter in these weak tents?
My little brother Ahmed said to my mom recently:
“Every day lentils, lentils, lentils… my stomach hurts from lentils.”
My mom cried when she heard their complaint, but she also thanked Allah that at least we had something to eat.
Food prices are beyond imagination:
1 kg of flour: $100
1 kg of onions: $42
12 eggs: $80
1 kg of garlic: $148
1 kg of potatoes: $30
