I am asking for help for a dear friend and neighbor, Renee. She is 64 years old and living with a spinal injury. After a lifetime of giving, she now needs help fixing her roof as well as the interior of her home. For years, Renee has been the kind of person who has shown up for others without hesitation. Some years ago, she moved into her family home to care for her aging mother. Before that, she took care of her grandmother who suffered from dementia, without help from others. Despite all that she has given, life has not been easy for her. She became a widow at the age of 38 and was seriously injured in a car accident that left her with a twisted spine. Today, she relies on a cane or walker just to get around. Even so, she continues to work two jobs to support herself because she is not currently receiving disability. One of the most selfless acts that Renee has done is donate a kidney to save the life of her older sister, which added 23 more years to her sister’s life. Renee also recently battled breast cancer, showing more of her strength and resilience as life goes on.
Now Renee is facing a problem she hasn’t been able to handle alone. The roof on her home has been failing for years. It has become a dangerous situation. Every time I drive down that street, I look at the massive hole in the roof, and each time it rains, water pours into her home, causing more damage inside. The tarp that lays on top is not an effective solution. Inside the home, there are bins and buckets to catch the water that comes in. The ceiling, walls, and floor in her bedroom are damaged. Because this has been going on for a while, there is a need to replace them as well as insulation and mold remediation. She recently shared with me that there’s a problem with the plumbing that causes water to back up in her bathtub. Renee has reached out for help, applying for special programs in the city of Detroit and in Wayne County for assistance, but no help has been provided.
We are raising funds to replace her roof, repair the interior, and restore her home to safety. Every donation, no matter how big or small, will go directly toward repairing her home. If you are able to donate or simply share this story, it would mean so much. Let’s help this hard-working, compassionate lady stay safe in her home. She has spent her life giving to others. Now it’s our turn to give back to her.
