Urgent Help Needed for Afghan Refugee Resettlement

Donation protected
TEAM Refugee 25 NYC is a citizen volunteer group working to help resettle refugees in the United States. We believe that everyone deserves a chance at pursuing a life of freedom and security even if, for some, it means starting over from scratch.

We are passionate individuals living across several boroughs of New York City, bringing a diverse set of perspectives and expertise in areas such as social work, non-profit, healthcare, and more.

Right now, we need your help to support Afghan refugees.

During the 20-year war in Afghanistan, many Afghan citizens worked alongside the United States in the fight against the Taliban. When the United States withdrew from the country in 2021, we attempted to help evacuate many of our Afghan partners and also granted Afghan Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs), allowing valid U.S. visas and legal U.S. refugee status, to tens of thousands of other Afghan nationals.

In recent news, the U.S. State Department is reviewing all visa programs amid reports of an impending new travel ban, and Afghanistan could be among the countries included. There is a sense of urgency for Afghan nationals with SIVs to travel to the U.S. as soon as possible as the travel ban may be imminent.

In cooperation with Sponsor Circles, a community-led initiative that supports everyday Americans in taking on the responsibility of welcoming newcomers to their communities, we are looking to sponsor an Afghan refugee for a minimum of three months, and we need your help.

What is the process to become a refugee?
Afghan nationals who have been granted SIVs are allowed valid U.S. visas and legal status as a “refugee.” They are approved to enter the United States and are able to get a Social Security card, register for social services and medical benefits, and be authorized to work.

How does refugee sponsorship work?
TEAM Refugee 25 NYC aims to provide practical and emotional support such as:

  • Assistance with housing and furnishings
  • Orienting individuals to community transportation and shopping
  • Helping them enroll in government programs and all benefits for which they are eligible, including Refugee Health/Medicaid
  • Assistance in seeking and enrolling individuals in English language courses
  • Assistance finding employment
  • Overall help adjusting to our city and country
  • Mentorship, should issues arise

How can you help?
We are committed to helping this person, but we cannot do it all on our own. Join our mission to support the resettlement of a refugee. Our goal is to fundraise $10,000 to help this person in all aspects of living for a 3-6 month period.

Please donate to our GoFundMe campaign to make a difference, together.

  • A donation of $34 would go toward a 7 day MTA transit pass
  • A donation of $50 would go toward cell phone coverage for two months
  • A donation of $100 would go toward professional attire for job interview
  • A donation of $500 would go towards a laptop to help in a job search
  • A donation of $900 would cover one month of housing cost

We appreciate any and all financial contributions.

Thank you.
