Justice for Baby Mohammad: Help Reunite Him with His Mother

Last week, 9-month-old baby Mohammad was forcibly taken from his mother’s arms by police and placed in the care of his father—who had recently filed for divorce and made claims that Mohammad ’s mother is mentally unfit to care for her son. According to Mohammad ’s mother, this was part of a plan by her husband and his family (including his parents and sister) to take custody of her child and deport her back to Afghanistan. Mohammad's mother arrived in the United States in 2024 and lived with her husband and his family in Colorado. Mohammad's mother reports enduring repeated verbal and physical abuse from her husband and his family—especially during her pregnancy. Fearing for her and her baby’s safety, she left their home during her third trimester and stayed with her sister through the birth and first month of motherhood.
Later, under family pressure, she returned to her husband’s household and lived in the basement for four months in near-total isolation. She was denied access to a phone, Wi-Fi, her sister, and even her parents in Afghanistan. Her husband reportedly told her that marrying her and bringing her to the U.S. was a favor in exchange for caring for his parents.

Many Afghan women in Colorado gathered and mate with her last week, witnessing her devastation and grief. She described the pain of having her infant son taken away:
“My son is only 9 months old—he cannot even sit properly. He was always in my arms. When I used to pray, he would pull my scarf and dress, asking to be picked up. He did not want to go. He cried as they took him from me. I am still breastfeeding. His father does not know how to take care of him. He cannot control his anger, I seen his anger. I am worried for the safety of my child; I love my baby and cannot live without him. I do not know what I did wrong. As a mom I want the best for my child. He is a happy babe, and I used to play with him. He loved screaming, hearing his voice back and sometimes we used to get loud. I just want my son back, I am lost, and I do not know what to do”
