Barney and Maximus were just minutes away from the end of their lives at the Coachella Valley Animal Center. Redlisted and out of time, a true miracle happened at the last hour: a kind adopter from Georgia stepped forward to save them.

We rushed to get them safely out and brought them to a temporary boarding facility while we began coordinate the logistics of getting them across the country to Georgia.

But once they were out of the shelter environment, reality set in. Barney and Maximus are absolutely terrified. Because of the severe trauma and neglect they’ve experienced, their deep fear has turned into reactivity toward humans. As much as we want them to get to their new life, we cannot safely send them to their adopter the way they are right now. It is simply not safe for the adopter, and it isn't fair to the boys to set them up for failure when they are this shut down.

We refuse to give up on them after coming this far. The best—and only—chance we can give Barney and Maximus is professional, intensive rehabilitation.
