I need help to get the next “Big Sally” PineWoodDerby Workshop Bus.
Big Sally is a 1987 MCI bus with a 6V92 engine. That means that she’s thirty years old and has a V-6 Diesel engine that displaces 92 cubic inches each cylinder. What that means is that, though the shop space is totally workable, nobody works on that particular engine any more. She loses compression and really has to struggle to get up hills any more, and parts are getting harder to find.
A Detroit Series-60-engine-bus will let mechs work on it for another twenty years.
And parts will be easier to find (like the windows, for instance). And I’ll be more careful getting the seats out this time . . . guaranteed.
I took a truck-driving gig for this summer to see if I could raise the coin that way. I can, but it will take about a year. I don't think Big Sally will last that long.
Y’all know how I feel about PineWood Derby . . . it’s a mission, a calling, a ministry, even. It’s important. Period. You know the expression your kid gets when his-her car comes blowing down the track and actually wins or places . . . or even just gets across the finish line. I’m getting teary just thinking about those. I love watching the ferocious concentration car-building teams put on getting this car just exactly right. The Big Kids on the bus get to be heroes for the Little Kids. I love it. And I get to play with everybody. That is so much fun.
Help me get the cash together before the end of July. That will give me time to build out the new ("and improved") shop completed and get back to Dallas and Fort Worth and El Paso and Denver and Kansas City in time to get everybody back aboard and building their championship cars again.
“Thank you for your support.” (I loved those commercials.) I love to play with words, but I don’t have the right ones to express how much I appreciate your help
Thank you.
