Manche Menschen wachsen einem so sehr ans Herz, dass sie wie Familie werden – genauso ist es bei Lian-Maré „Tjom“ und Ruan.

Tjom war vor vielen Jahren die Austauschschülerin Jonathans Schwester – seitdem ist sie ein Teil unserer Familie. Seit wenigen Jahren sind Sie und ihr Ehemann Ruan mit dem Ziel einer besseren beruflichen Bildung nach Deutschland gezogen. Hier brachten sie vor knapp einem Jahr das glücklichste „Grinsebaby“ zur Welt, das man sich nur vorstellen kann. Jonathans Eltern nennen die beiden liebevoll ihre „südafrikanischen Adoptivkinder“. Und wer die beiden kennt, weiß: Sie sind außergewöhnlich warmherzige, fleißige und positive Menschen. Doch leider trifft das Schicksal auch solche Personen:

Tjom hat Krebs – ein metastasierender Tumor, der ihr alles abverlangt. Sie kämpft tapfer und muss regelmäßig zur Chemotherapie. Oft ist sie danach so erschöpft oder sogar medizinisch eingeschränkt, dass sie ihre kleine Tochter Lené nicht betreuen kann – weil sie nach der Chemo noch „abstrahlt“. Dazu kommen unzählige Kontrolluntersuchungen.

Trotzdem geben Sie und Ruan alles. Er arbeitet, kümmert sich um die kleine Lené, wenn Tjom nicht kann, begleitet sie zu Terminen und versucht, sie aufzufangen – emotional und organisatorisch. Doch sie haben hier in Deutschland keine direkte Familie, die sie auffängt. Und die Belastung ist riesig – auch finanziell.

Some people become so dear to you that they feel like family – that’s exactly the case with Lian-Maré “Tjom” and Ruan.

Many years ago, Tjom was an exchange student hosted by Jonathan’s sister – and ever since, she has been a part of our family. A few years ago, she and her husband Ruan moved to Germany in pursuit of better educational and professional opportunities. Just under a year ago, they welcomed the happiest little “smiley baby” you can imagine into the world. Jonathan’s parents lovingly call the couple their “Southafrican adoptive children.” And anyone who knows them will agree: they are exceptionally warm-hearted, hardworking, and positive people.

But sadly, even people like them are not spared by fate.

Tjom has cancer – a metastasizing tumor that demands everything from her. She is fighting bravely and regularly undergoes chemotherapy. Often, she is so exhausted or medically restricted afterward that she cannot care for their young daughter Lené – especially since she sometimes still “emits” after chemo. On top of that there are countless follow-up appointments.

Still, both Tjom and Ruan are giving it their all. He works, takes care of little Lené when Tjom can’t, accompanies her to medical appointments, and tries to support her – emotionally and logistically. But they don’t have any close family in Germany to lean on. The burden is enormous – emotionally and financially.
