May 29th, 2019 - the official date that his name was added to the UNOS list for a kidney transplant!
Gary is finally on the Kidney Transplant list and could be called at any time (they are suggesting before the year is even over!) The stress and financial burden this presents is what brings us here.
After the transplant, Gary will have HUGE expenses for his anti-rejection medications, which he will need to take for the rest of his life. He will also need time to recover from the surgery, which because of his history will likely be longer and the concerns for complications is much greater. Any funds raised are for the purposes of his long-term medical expenses and to supplement his monthly expenses during recovery to ensure he is healthy enough to return to living his best life.
Any support you can offer is greatly appreciated!
HiStory - Gary was born with a rare disorder; Eagle-Barrett Syndrome, which affects chest wall muscles and the urinary tract. (also known as "Prune Belly") Immediately after birth he was taken by helicopter to NY Hospital where he underwent his first surgery and it was discovered that while he had 2 kidneys, 1 only had about 35% function. By the age of 5, Gary had endured multiple surgeries to help repair and alleviate symptoms of the syndrome . It was during one of these surgeries that his healthy kidney stopped working all together and he was left with just the one damaged kidney functioning around 35%.
Gary has spent his entire life with low kidney function and knowing that a transplant would be necessary, but that didn't stop him! Despite the side effects from the syndrome and MANY more surgeries, he worked full time for 20 years at the same company, traveled and lived life.
In May 2014, all that changed. "Normal" life as he knew it was over!
He had entered into Chronic Kidney Failure and was now in need of dialysis 3 days a week, 4 hours a session. From this point forward everything was different - he could no longer work full time or travel easily - in fact even just day-to-day activities became that much more difficult or impossible.
During the long waiting period for disability, he realized living in New Jersey was no longer an option and he relocated closer to his family in Florida. Despite a monthly disability check, he has still had to push himself to work part-time just to make ends meet.
That brings us to right now, where he has spent 5 years on dialysis and the last year completing a battery of tests to be officially listed on the transplant list.
In addition to donating, if you would like to be tested as a possible Living Donor, please use the contact button and we will share that process with you.
Thank you!
