Jamaica is facing one of the most severe natural disasters in its history. With Hurricane Melissa now a Category 5 storm, the island is bracing for catastrophic winds, flooding, and widespread destruction.

Power cuts have already begun, with more than 50,000 customers across Jamaica losing electricity as the storm moves across the island. Officials are warning that the damage could surpass even Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, which was previously the most destructive storm in the country’s history.

Wind gusts are expected to exceed 150 mph, with storm surges reaching up to 13 feet in coastal areas. Rainfall totals of 15 to 30 inches are forecast, and some areas could see up to 40 inches, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides. Because the storm is moving slowly, many communities will face long periods of extreme conditions, with roads cut off and families isolated for days.

Experts are already calling this worse than Hurricane Katrina in terms of potential devastation to infrastructure and livelihoods. The humanitarian impact on Jamaica could last months, possibly years, as the country begins to rebuild.

How the funds will be spent

All funds raised will go directly to the charity or initiative we collectively choose, ensuring transparency and accountability. The funds will support:

• Emergency relief: food, clean water, shelter, and medical supplies for affected families

• Rebuilding homes and local infrastructure once it is safe to do so

• Ongoing community recovery and support for displaced residents

Once we’ve reached our goal, everything raised will be donated to the selected charity or initiative, and we will provide public updates on how every contribution is used.

This is about unity, compassion, and standing with our people when they need us most. Jamaica needs us now, and together, we can make a real difference.
