Io: “Karl! Ho avuto un’idea.. voglio tornare a Imperia in bicicletta partendo da Bristol, cosa ne pensi?”
Carlo: “Ahah, ma tu sei matto!” - Poi, dopo alcuni lunghi minuti di riflessione, come era suo solito prima di parlare: “Però dovresti farlo, se non lo fai ora che sei giovane, quando altrimenti?”
Pochi mesi dopo, il 12 giugno 2020, Carlo ebbe un malore e morì a 55 anni.
Carlo era il mio patrigno, per 15 anni è stato parte della mia vita e membro fondamentale della nostra famiglia. Ci conoscemmo grazie alla condivisa passione per l’enduro e, fin da subito, mi colpirono la dedizione, la generosità e l’abilità di motociclista e meccanico, con le sue manone infatti era in grado di riparare e di risolvere qualsiasi cosa!
Anche mamma – per la tenerezza e la serietà che dimostrava – ne rimase affascinata e immediatamente si innamorarono come ragazzini, “ricordo molto bene come sorridevi e arrossivi, mamma, ogni volta che ricevevi un suo messaggio!”
Carlo entrò in casa nostra in un periodo difficile, con i miei fratelli, Tiziano e Filippo, stavamo vivendo il turbinio dell’adolescenza ma nonostante questo, Carlo divenne subito un punto fermo per noi; con le sue storie incredibili, dai giri in moto nel deserto a scampati naufragi, e soprattutto grazie alla sua dedizione ed onestà morale.
Anno dopo anno, si è creato un legame che non credevo possibile, l’affetto reciproco era tale che noi consideravamo (e tutt'oggi consideriamo) Carlo come un padre e so che anche lui ci vedeva come figli suoi, era fiero e orgoglioso di questa grande famiglia.
Adesso, ad un anno da quel terribile 12 giugno 2020, inizierò quell’avventura che proprio Carlo mi incoraggiò ad intraprendere, non perchè sono “giovane” ma perchè ogni giorno può essere l’ultimo, indipendentemente dall’età e, come ricorda sempre mia madre , “ogni lasciata è persa”.
In memoria di Carlo voglio condividere con voi questo viaggio e, nel tentativo di trasformare una ricorrenza terribile nell’opportunità per ricordare e diffondere il ricordo di una persona fantastica, vorrei avviare una raccolta fondi a sostegno dell’affido familiare ed in particolare della casa famiglia di Imperia: Casa Famiglia Pollicino . Carlo amava i bambini e provava solidarietà e stima per tutti coloro che sostengono e aiutano i piccoli sofferenti.
Nazzareno e Ileana accolgono in casa loro, da quasi 25 anni, bambini che per un certo periodo della loro vita , più o meno lungo, non possono vivere con i loro genitori . Le motivazioni del loro allontanamento sono le più disparate: dal divorzio, a problemi di salute, dal maltrattamento all’abuso fino all’abbandono fisico del minore. I bambini accolti , sono percepiti come figli e tra loro come fratelli e sorelle, sentimento che rimarrà poi per tutta la vita anche quando saranno distanti tra loro. Lo scopo della casa famiglia è quello di dare ali ai bambini sufficientemente robuste per volare da soli nel cielo della vita.
La raccolta fondi verrà investita, dipendentemente dalla cifra raggiunta in uno o più dei seguenti progetti:
· Progetto agricoltura: avendo a disposizione mq.4000 di terreno, Casa Famiglia Pollicino vorrebbe acquistare l’attrezzatura per coinvolgere i bambini in una coltivazione bio, mettendoli a contatto con la natura - stima costo 1500€
· Progetto cultura: organizzare gite culturali in città quali Genova, Torino, Firenze etc e incentivare l’apprendimento della lingua inglese con lezioni dedicate - costo variabile
· Progetto ludico: acquistare giochi da esterno (struttura con scivolo, altalena, casetta legno, etc.) - stima costo 1200€

La casa famiglia opera dal 1998 ed accoglie minori da 0 a 10 anni con problematiche familiari, allontanati dal proprio nucleo familiare dal Tribunale dei Minori. I bambini rimangono nella famiglia il tempo necessario al servizio sociale per decidere il rientro nella propria famiglia oppure in una situazione di affido piu’ definitiva. La loro permanenza puo’ variare da pochi mesi a diversi anni. Oltre ai bimbi accolti (max. 5 per legge), Nazzareno e Ileana hanno 3 figli di 20 e 22 anni e una ragazza adottata con disabilita’ cognitiva. Sino ad oggi, hanno accolto oltre 90 bambini ed alcuni di questi oggi sono genitori. La bellezza di questa esperienza è il fortissimo legame che si è instaurato con la maggior parte di loro, sebbene vivano ora a migliaia di chilometri da Imperia.

Carlo was my step-father, part of my life for 15 years and invaluable member of our family. We got to know each other thanks to our shared passion for off-road motorbike and, right from the start, I was struck by his dedication, generosity and skills of a motorcyclist and mechanic, in fact with his big hands he was able to repair and solve anything!
Even mum - for the tenderness and seriousness he showed - was fascinated and immediately fell in love like kids, "I remember very well how you smiled and blushed, mum, every time you received a message from him!"
Carlo joined our household in a difficult period, my brothers, Tiziano and Filippo, and I were experiencing the whirlwind of adolescence but despite this, Carlo immediately became a point of reference for us; with his incredible stories, from motorcycle rides in the African desert to surviving shipwrecks, but above all thanks to his dedication and moral honesty.
Year after year, our bond increased that I never thought possible and the mutual affection was such that Carlo was like our dad and, I know, he considered us like his children and was proud of this large family.
Now, one year after that terrible 12th June 2020, I will begin that adventure that Carlo himself encouraged me to undertake, not because I am young but because every day can be the last, regardless the age and, as mum always remembers, “never miss an opportunity”.
In memory of Carlo, I want to share this journey with you and, in an attempt to transform a terrible anniversary into an opportunity to remember and spread the memory of a fantastic person, I would like to start a fundraiser to support the foster care and, in particular, the foster house of Imperia: Casa Famiglia Pollicino . Carlo loved children and felt solidarity and esteem for all those who support and help the suffering children.
Casa Famiglia Pollicino is ran by Nazzareno and Ileana, who have welcomed into their home, for almost 25 years, children that, for a certain period of their life, cannot live with their parents. The reasons for this separation are the most diverse: from divorce, to health problems, from mistreatment to abuse up to the physical abandonment of the child. The children, taken into care there, are seen as sons/daughters and among them as siblings, a feeling that will stay for life even later when they are distant from each other. The purpose of the foster home is to give children wings that are strong enough to fly alone in the sky of life.
The fundraising will be invested, depending on the collected amount, in one or more of the following projects:
• Agriculture project: having 4000 square meters of available land, tools and equipment would be purchased to involve children in organic farming, putting them in contact with nature – appox. cost 1500€
• Culture project: organize cultural trips to cities such as Genoa, Turin, Florence etc and encourage the learning of English with dedicated lessons - variable cost
• Playful project: purchase an outdoor structure with slide, swing, etc. – appox. cost 1200€

The foster home has been operating since 1998 and welcomes minors from 0 to 10 years with family problems, removed from their family by the Juvenile Court. The children remain in the family for the time necessary for social work to decide whether they return to their family or in a more definitive situation of foster care. Their stay can vary from a few months to several years. In addition to them (max. 5 by law), Nazzareno and Ileana have 3 children aged 20 and 22 and an adopted girl with cognitive disabilities. To date, they have welcomed over 90 children and some of these are parents today. The beauty of this experience is the strong bond that has been established with most of them, although they now live thousands of kilometers from Imperia.
