We have moved our donation page to the following link! https://advancement.miami.edu/netcommunity/sslpage.aspx?pid=1643
The Debbie Project is a University of Miami Miller School of Medicine student organization in which medical students volunteer weekly at The Debbie School.
As seen in the growing body of research on early intervention programs for atypically developing children, more one-on-one tutoring leads to marked improvement in cognitive, social, and motor skills. By cultivating long lasting partnerships between medical students and Debbie School students, our volunteers hope to assist the Debbie School in providing a loving, friendly, and safe educational environment where children will be able to reach their full potential.
What is The Debbie School?
The Debbie Institute is a family centered, early intervention educational and research facility for children who have developmental disabilities. Established more than forty years ago as a center for research, training, and service, the Debbie School seeks to investigate problems that affect children with disabilities, to provide training for university students, and to offer services for children and their families. Our mission is to nurture and enrich the lives of young children during the critical years of early learning in an inclusive, educational environment that creates the foundation for lifelong success.
The school's philosophy is that early identification and intervention improves outcomes for children with disabilities and prepares them to participate in inclusive environments with their peers. Our goal is to provide every child with the opportunity to maximize their development in the areas of communication, self-help, cognition, social-emotional, and fine and gross motor in classrooms filled with trust, security, happiness, and safety.
The educational services of the Debbie School are provided for children and families through three separate programs. The Auditory-Oral Education Program serves children who are deaf and hard of hearing from birth through eight years of age and the B-2 Early Education Program serves children with varying exceptionalities from birth through three years of age. The Early Childhood Education Program serves typically developing children from birth through four years of age.

Why do we need your help?
In order to work with students at The Debbie School, The Debbie Project Volunteers need Level II Background Checks for the burdensome price of $85 per volunteer. Unfortunately, neither the Debbie School, which uses all of its resources to provide services for its students, nor our loan-laiden medical students can afford this expense.
By reaching our goal of $5,000, we would be able to fund Level II Background checks for almost 60 volunteers! That would be 60 additional one-on-one tutoring hours PER WEEK for students at The Debbie School.
Please consider donating! We appreciate each donation, no matter how small!
Thank you from The Debbie Project
