Hi Everyone!
Recently a group of us volunteers did some volunteer work at a orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya called Umbrella Children’s Home. The orphanage is fairly new and is in need of some help to improve their poor living situation!
There are currently 29 orphans in the home, all who are either a victim of physical or sexual abuse, or have been disowned by their family. They are currently sleeping in a old tin panelled structure that once was used to house chickens. The boys and girls have been split into two small rooms where they sleep in bunks, crammed 3 to a bed.
It’s mandatory for the children to attend school, but due to limited funding many of the children are required to share the same backpack while wearing secondhand mismatched uniforms. They also have nowhere to complete their homework other than in their bunks or outside.
Despite all this adversity, these children all share an inspiring sense of positivity and joy, which we were privileged to experience! Many of them are very passionate about singing and dancing and they all have dreams about a brighter future.
Thanks to their caretakers, Nancy and Mr. Boaz who put everything they have into these children, they receive the love and care they otherwise wouldn’t have.
Below is a list of goals we wish to accomplish to help improve their living situation:
a) Rebuild the Perimeter Wall
- the current wall is a collection of tin panels, in a neighbourhood that has regular theft.
-$400
b) Construction of Study Room
- a proper room for them to study and do homework.
-$500
c) Payment of Outstanding Medical Bills & Schools Fees
-due to the poor conditions the children are frequently ill and are subject to infections.
-$300
Any extra money raised will go towards further construction projects the orphanage has such as the building of extra rooms for the children and allowing for the orphanage to accommodate for more children.
We will be collecting donations up until July 24th so that we can get the funds to the orphanage before leaving Kenya.
Thank you!!
