Lafeber Company has started a GoFundMe to raise money for exotic pet birds and their owners evacuating Ukraine. Lafeber will be matching all funds raised up to $3,000 by providing the two receiving parties with the equivalent value in Nutri-Berries.
As millions of Ukrainians flee their homes in response to Russia's invasion, some families face extra challenges as they must bring along their furry or feathered family members. For pets who are accustomed to their daily routines and comfy homes, this reality is both scary and uncomfortable. As many families reach safety zones, the issue remains: how to proceed in caring for both themselves and their pets.
Money raised will be distributed evenly between two separate efforts, both working to send food, proper cages, and stress-relieving toys. Read more about them below:
Dr. Aleksandra Maj:
Dr. Maj originally reached out to us as a long-time fan of Nutri-Berries. You may already be familiar with Dr. Maj, as we recently released an Avian Expert Article on her efforts. Read more here.
Aleksandra Kornelia Maj is a Poland-based veterinarian who has gone to great lengths to help evacuees of the Ukraine region who are entering Poland and who have pet parrots. With the array of discord, it becomes difficult to properly care for birds. Help is needed. And Aleksandra has stepped up to the plate with the extraordinary offer of assistance. On her Instagram page, she has provided important information for people arriving with parrots and helped to direct care packages to birds in need. Dr. Maj is also providing veterinary services, free of charge.
Dr. Maj is working to coordinate the delivery of food, proper cages, and stress-relieving toys.
The Polish Association For the Welfare of Exotic Birds:
The Polish Association For the Welfare of Exotic Birds is a non-government organization that specializes in exotic bird focused trainings and conferences, as well as working to establish greater protections for exotic birds under Polish law. Currently, The Polish Association for the Welfare of Exotic Birds is the only animal welfare organization exclusively working to bring aid to exotic birds during this time.
A member of the association is of Ukrainian origin, and has been able to establish direct contact with volunteers. This has allowed the association to establish a base in Lviv where supplies are being stored for parrots from Poland and from which a system has been created to deliver food to birds across Ukraine. Their efforts have already helped dozens of families free of charge.
Our contact, Joanna Karocka provides some insight on the situation:
"We have reached, among others to the keeper of soft-eaters from the Kiev Zoo, to whom we donated a few kilograms of specialized food, as well as to birds in Odessa and Zaporizhia. And many more in other parts of Ukraine. We already know how to do it effectively and we want to continue our work. We do not know how long our help will be needed, but we are afraid that we must be prepared for long-term actions.
We also help people who want to leave Ukraine with parrots and those who have already come to Poland.
Providing food and any other assistance to individual parrots generates high costs that we are not able to bear from our own funds. As an association, we only live off donations, we do not conduct any profit-making activities. In order to continue helping, we do need support. That is why we turn to you, as a company related to birds and parrots, with a request for help. We are there, we have direct contact with people in need in Ukraine, with your support we will do more good for parrots in Ukraine. Your support will allow us to help longer and more effectively."
