UKECommunity: Ramadan in Spring

UKEC is a non-profit student organisation that acts as an umbrella body of over 77 Malaysian Students societies in universities across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Therefore, UKEC represents the collective interests of over 16000 Malaysian students.

UKEC's pilot project, UKECommunity: Ramadan in Spring, endeavours to gather Malaysian students and diasporas in the UK & Eire to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims through the distribution of food care packages and community iftars.

Food packages known as ‘Rice and Shine’ will be distributed to students on a needs basis. It consists of essentials such as rice, eggs, oil and sauces. Community Iftars will be held in areas with high costs of living. Malaysians from all walks of life are welcome to join the Community Iftar and indulge in an array of Malaysian dishes. In the spirit of generosity and community, we aspire to bring fellow Malaysians together as a form of enrichment in the holy month of Ramadan. This is aligned with the amiable nature of the Malaysian tradition of exchanging and sharing food with neighbours and friends, as we do back home.

The rationale behind this programme is the rising cost of living in the UK where tube fares and energy bills are soaring and goods in markets are being rationed. The situation has affected many students, especially those studying in areas with high costs of living where more than half of their allowances are being allocated to pay rent. With UKECommunity: Ramadan in Spring, we hope to ease the burden of affected students in the UK and Eire.

With the funds raised, 1/3 will be directed to the expenses needed for community iftars in London, Belfast and Dublin. While 2/3 will be used for food packages, distributed to Malaysian students that require assistance.

As a non-profit, we rely on the generosity of donors to help us continue our work and make a positive impact in our community.

*UKEC's Treasury office has authorised Low Kian Jin, UKEC's National Treasurer to withdraw the donations upon the campaign's conclusion. All donations shall be used as mentioned, where 1/3 of the funds will be directed to the expenses needed for community iftars and another 2/3 for food packages.
