Uganda Village Project

Donation protected
As some of you know, I am heading to Uganda for two and a half months over the summer!

I am currently a graduate student at Boston University School of Public Health and I am focusing on Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology/Biostatistics. In order to receive a master’s degree, public health students are required to fulfill a practicum. This is an in-field project where the student practices the skills learned in school and applies them in the real-world.

Well, my “real-world” experience will be this summer, June 8th to August 23rd in the District of Iganga, Uganda. I was accepted as a Lead Intern for the Uganda Village Project (UVP). UVP’s mission is to facilitate community health and well-being in rural Uganda through improved access, education, and prevention.

UVP teams will consist of 3 internationals and 3 Ugandans. The Ugandans will be on the project long term, to facilitate sustainability. Some of the projects they have included a WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) program, HIV program, malaria program, obstetric fistula program, and a reproductive health program. They create these projects so they are culturally appropriate and match the needs of the village.

There are three different intern groups each summer:

Launch Team: community assessment and evaluation to understand the pressing needs of a village, create a program to fit their needs, then implement it.

Follow Up Teams: will evaluate last summer’s program by conducting surveys, speaking with community members, and developing targeted interventions

Project Teams: same as follow up teams but will analyze the progress of the program that was implemented two summers ago!

I love that they are committed to ensuring the programs are holding up!

My budget follows:

$1700 for the flight to Entebbe, Uganda and back

$722 for vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis (it is ridiculous that my insurance doesn’t cover this!)

$120 for a SafeBoda helmet (motorcycles are a primary way of transport but are extremely dangerous as the roads in Uganda are often non-existent, do not have regulations, and are crowded with pedestrians and livestock!

$500 for insecticide clothing, supplies for my team (markers, paper, etc), and lastly for toiletries that are adequate for Uganda! (no showers/running water--I need to invest in some more appropriate necessities.)

I am currently planning on using the money I have saved from working but I would love ANY help at all! I am in for an insane adventure/challenge/experience and I can’t wait to update you all! (However, it will be after the trip given the lack of internet and power in the villages!)

Best,
Emily
