UGANDA VOLUNTEER TRIP, JANUARY 2019
GOAL: ENROLL CHILDREN INTO SCHOOL FOR THE FULL TERM YEAR

Hi Everyone,

During the last week of January, my dear friend Dora Molina and I will be heading to Uganda for one week to volunteer in a rural village near Mukono town. As the new school year is approaching for the kids, our primary focus on this trip is to enroll children into school who would otherwise not be able to attend without sponsorship. As many of you know, I recently spent 2 weeks doing charitable volunteer work in the same village where I witnessed first hand the countless number of kids who are not attending school because their families cannot afford the school fees and supplies. Seeing an opportunity to a brighter future being denied to these kids completely shattered my heart. I felt compelled to bring awareness to the circumstances here, so we can help this community in any way we can.

During my previous trip, I had the opportunity to visit several local schools to determine the best fit for enrolling sponsored children. All of our sponsored kids will attend Chain Kindergarten Nursery School and Martin Nykoyo Primary School. *A detailed list of the school enrollment  fees and supplies can be found at the bottom of the page. Both schools are located within the same vicinity and are an excellent choice providing a quality education for the students. The schools are relatively close to the village which makes it walking distance for the older kids. This allows us to avoid transportation costs for this age group. As far as the nursery school children, we will hire boda-boda  rides which will take them to/from school everyday of the school year.

Dora and I are very excited to be staying with our amazing host family- Bazil, Alice, and their four children. Bazil and Alice, both a doctor and psychologist, quit their jobs in the busy city to move to the village and dedicate their lives to helping this community. It was so beautiful to see how they open up their home to all of the children and families in need, providing medical care and supplies. We are very grateful to Bazil and Alice  who have played such an important role in allowing us to make this trip happen.

Aside from getting the kids ready for the school year, our days will consist of spending time with the families in need, providing childcare, warm meals, and creating fun daily activities. We are very excited for a field trip where we will take around 100 children to a local animal sanctuary. This will most likely be the first time the kids have ever left the village. It will be a full day of fun as they get to learn about different animal species as well as have a hands on experience and interact with the animals. We are beyond  thrilled to be able to do this and can't wait to see all their beautiful smiles!

Dora, who is a video content producer, will be documenting our entire trip as we want to share our experience with you! We hope we are able to continue to contribute to the children’s education in the future. Our biggest dream is see the kids enrolled every year and encourage them to finish school. Dora is also very passionate about volunteering and helping others as she recently spent 2 months in Nepal where she taught English at a local school. This will be her first visit to Uganda and she is very excited to meet all the kids!

"While volunteering teaching English at a rural school for one month in Nepal it was definitely an eye opening experience. First of all, I was smiling 100% of the time thanks to my Nepali kids. I learned that living in a unified community of family and friends is what makes people the happiest and that luxury isn’t important. I also learned that good education is crucial for the next generation and that many kids really need our help and guidance to explore their potential.
I am never going to forget how these kids ran towards us volunteers everyday and asked us with enthusiasm “What’s your name? Where are you from? How are you?” Not to mention the countless times they asked us to dance and sing. I feel very grateful to have lived this experience surrounded by some phenomenal people whom I learned from and opened up to. I left Chitwan super inspired and with a huge smile on my face." - Dora Molina

We need your help to make a bigger difference and give more children the opportunity to an education. We are so grateful to all of you and for any amount donated! All funds raised through this GoFundMe will go towards school enrollment fees and school supplies as this is the priority and purpose of our trip. A big thanks to all of you for taking the time to read our story and we can’t wait to share our trip with you!

With love,
Alexis and Dora
