Hello, my name is Daisy, and I’ve set up this fundraiser for my mum, Emma Stone, who was diagnosed with ALS Motor Neurone Disease in May 2025.

ALS MND is a progressive and fatal condition that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. This paralysis affects everything from bodily movement to eating, speech, breathing, and, in some cases, it can cause cognitive changes too. There is currently no cure.

Like many children would say, my mum is the best mum in the world. My family would like to do everything we can to give her the best possible quality of life.

Early in 2024, Mum started to have problems with her left foot, often tripping over it or twisting her ankle and even breaking it. Gradually, her other foot started to be affected too, her legs began to weaken and she noticed problems with her balance. It took many months of tests, scans and appointments before we received the worst possible diagnosis.

Today (October 2025), Mum uses a walking frame around the house and a wheelchair out and about, her left arm is starting to weaken, and eating and speaking is becoming increasingly difficult. This is obviously extremely distressing to go through, but also extremely distressing to watch. Her needs are constantly changing as this awful disease relentlessly progresses.

As our family tries to come to terms with this devastating new reality, my parents are facing a lot of additional and unexpected costs, at a time when mum has had to give up the job she loves, and my dad has had to cut down on his work (alongside recovering from knee replacement surgery himself) to care for her. Expenses range from small items like ‘sock aids’ to help mum put her own socks on, to bigger costs such as a stairlift, and also some very big costs - their bathroom is too small to convert into an accessible wet room so they’re having to build an extension to house one. A wet room will make it easier for Mum to shower, as stepping or being lifted into the bath/shower we have upstairs is becoming increasingly difficult. Mum is also paying for complementary therapies to help ease her symptoms and prolong movement, including acupuncture and visits to a specialist neurorehabilitation clinic. She has also invested in a red light therapy system which supports brain-gut connection, an area which is being explored as a potential treatment for ALS. All of this adds up, so any contributions at all would be extremely helpful.

Donations will be spent on:

  • Treatment sessions at an award-winning neurorehabilitation clinic which combines direct current stimulation and non-thermal laser technology with the aim of improving signal transmission from nerves to muscles - to help keep her muscles working for as long as possible. (It's very far to travel to, but we’d like to take her as regularly as we can).
  • Regular acupuncture, which helps with symptoms, including painful muscle cramps and fatigue, as well as stress.
  • Buying a lightweight, foldable, motorised wheelchair for everyday use, that meets Mum’s current needs, so that she can get out and about to see friends and go shopping, etc, for as long as possible. (She is thrilled with her new off-road one, which means she can go out in the countryside again, but she would also love to have a lightweight one that friends can easily put in their car boot for outings and which she can control herself, rather than be pushed around).
  • Items needed to help Mum live as independent a life as possible, e.g. a bed guard to make it easier to turn over at night, and aids that will make it easier for her to dress herself.

Over time, Mum will need more equipment and care. All donations will go towards covering illness-related costs.

My mum has spent her whole life working for charities, helping other people, and it’s a completely unexpected turn of events to be asking for donations to help her. There are a million good causes out there, but if you would like to contribute and help my mum then please donate here - my whole family and I would appreciate your support enormously.

Thank you so much.
