UCDVO for the COBET Summer school project, Tanzania

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Aoife and I’m a law student at University College Dublin.

This summer I am so grateful to have the opportunity to travel to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to participate in the COBET Summer school project with UCD Volunteer Overseas and the Holy Union Sisters. Complementary Basic Education in Tanzania (COBET) is an accelerated primary school programme for children who have had difficulty accessing education due to disadvantage or family circumstances. It is run by the Holy Union, a congregation of sisters in Tanzania, Kenya and Europe, working in education and social welfare. This four week summer school project provides many children with a second chance at education, helping them to progress into secondary school.

As part of a small group of volunteers, I will be supporting COBET School staff in engaging students, by incorporating non formal education activities into the COBET curriculum, including sports, art, games and other activities. As well as this, I will be helping to increase local students’ English language fluency.

All volunteers are required to raise a minimum of €1,550, the majority of which will go directly to UCDVO’s overseas partners and contribute to their development programmes. The funds raised will be allocated as follows:

• €1,450 for partner programmes and project costs (including accommodation, local transport, food, water, etc)
• €100 for UCDVO programme administration, (overseas travel insurance, health and safety, monitoring and evaluation)

These funds do not include the cost of flights, visa or vaccinations. Any donation, no matter how small, will contribute to ensuring that the Holy Union sisters can continue to provide quality education for up to 10,000 children and young people in the Mbagala suburb of Dar es Salaam.

As part of my fundraising project I will be climbing Carrauntoohill, Irelands highest mountain. I will be documenting this on my Instagram.

I am so incredibly grateful to be given this amazing opportunity. This project truly means so much to me and any donation that you can give, no matter how much, is deeply appreciated and will go a long way. Even if you cannot donate, it would mean just as much to me if you could share this page with friends and family.

Thank-you so much for your kindness and support which is bringing me one step closer to achieving my goal!
