On August 1st of this year, Ashton was doing what any 11 year old little man should be doing. Enjoying the last days of Summer Vacation. While playing around, Ashton slipped on a piece of cardboard, bruising his foot and acquiring a small scrape. Ashton's father, Jerry took a look at the foot and seeing just the small cut, put Ashton on the couch to give his foot a rest.
Over the next couple of days, the pain started to get stronger for Ashton, and on Saturday when his mother, Tara, arrived home from a business trip, she took one look at her normally strong little dude and decided a Doctor visit was in order. The Doctor could not find any excessive swelling or bruising but wanted an X-ray to be sure. First thing Monday morning, Ashton was brought to the Hospital for the X Ray. Although the X Ray showed no break or fracture, the doctors did see the scrape was inflamed and showing signs of infection. Along with the inflammation, Ashton started developing a high fever.
Taking no chances, the hospital began administering antibiotics and other medications. With all of these strangers poking and prodding and oxygen masks and hoses, machines beeping and hollering, Ashton's anxiety went thru the roof. His heart rate was everywhere, the infection was fighting his body, causing dips in blood pressure, and poor Ashton started fighting just trying to get out. The decision was made to intubate, and give Ashton's body a chance to help combat whatever was making this little guy so sick.
A staph infection, with a name I wont even attempt to spell, was found to be in his heel. Even after surgery to remove infected tissue, the bacteria was still trying to take control of this sweet boy, growing in his blood. The doctors went into overdrive, pushing liter upon liter of medicine, helping Ashton to kick this disease from his body.
Over the next 5 days, Ashton fought. Friday morning came and tests could not find the bacteria in the blood. Just when Tara and Jerry thought the worst was behind them, the team of doctors explained that although the infection seems to be gone, Ashton is having problems removing all the fluids. A large build up of fluid is around his heart and lungs, and the medicines designed to help him drain these fluids are not working.
The team of doctors have decided to transfer him, 2 and a half hours south, to a hospital with a specialized cardiac department to help. As of now, Ashton still fighting for his life, is enroute to the hospital.
Last year, a new city water main line was installed in the Wing's neighborhood. This city line also brought with it a new bill, the homeowners portion. The monthly bill nearly doubling the mortgage, Jerry and Tara had to make a decision. They were forced to cancel their family medical coverage, sacrificing that for even more necessary bills. It wasn't a decision taken lightly, and one they will forever regret.
Over 7 days of hospital and doctor bills, as well as a 2 hour ambulance ride and a surgery that we can only hope will save Ashton's life, has skyrocketed the medical expenses. This GoFundMe is to help with the monumental debt that has been accumulated as well as the costs that are down the road.
Please help Ashton and his family any way you can. Anything will help, but no matter what keep sending your love. Whether prayer, thoughts, tears or messages of hope, Ashton and his whole family can use all of it.
Thank you
