For years, our neighbourhood in Sutton, London, has struggled with hazardous fly-tipping on a strip of private land near our homes. The site is now an unsafe dumping ground, filled with dangerous waste like asbestos, mattresses, and fridges. This isn’t just an eyesore - it’s a serious health risk for our families and wildlife, and has even put off potential buyers, harming property values.

We’ve followed the proper steps, but the delays have left us facing the consequences. It’s time for action. Together, pushed for a swift and safe resolution that upholds the Environmental Protection Act 1990, protects our community’s health, and safeguards the local environment. With your help, we started the waste clearance today (Wednesday 15th July). Thanks to everyone who contributed!

The waste clearance beginning on 15/07/26

We have successfully crowdfunded to raise £3,000 to hire licensed professionals to safely clear the waste and restore the site. The site clearance began on Wednesday 15th July. There was so much waste that the contractor is having to complete over several days. But today it's looking great, as Tom, local resident says:

"The transformation is incredible. It's hard to believe this is the same site. The contractors have one more visit, either tomorrow or Monday, to clear the remaining areas, but even with a little left to do, the difference is remarkable. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, supported and helped make this happen. We've still got more work ahead, but this is a fantastic step forward for the whole community."

Asbestos removal, including hazardous high grade insultation board

We brought in a specialist asbestos waste contractor who took away 3 sheets of low grade asbestos and a few large bags of broken asbestos. Unfortunately contractors also found some Asbestos Insulating Board (high grade asbestos) amongst the broken asbestos which was more expensive to clear, but a local business kindly topped up their donation to cover the cost.

A local fencing contractor (ANT Fencing in Carshalton) kindly brought some second hand low cost heras fencing to site so that we could secure, help prevent vehicular access and reduce likelihood of fly-tipping. This, combined with the CCTV signage we had donated, and CCTV which residents installed on own properties, will help deter fly-tipping.

Thanks again to those local residents and businesses who have supported this project so far! We'll keep the crowdfund 'live' for a few more days in case people would still like to contribute for ongoing projects to support wildlife, but thanks to your donations, we now have enough to clear the waste and help nature to recolonise the site and restore it as a Green Corridor.

What Happens Next?

Once the site is cleared, we will invoice the council to recover the costs. Any funds reimbursed will be invested back into the community to make the space beautiful and welcoming.
