Help Kiara Rebuild Her Dream and Jamaica

My name is Cindy Scheiferstein and We opened our home to Kiara, a brilliant and loving J-1 exchange student from Jamaica whose only dream is a college education. Sadly, the recent Hurricane Melissa has jeopardized that dream. While Kiara is safe, her family and friends in Jamaica are now facing a severe financial crisis due to the worst hurricane they have ever encountered. Basic needs are now unattainable. They need our help. Kiara has such a huge heart and wants to help all of her family and the surrounding area.
this morning I received this text from her in Jamaica:
My name is Kiara many may know me, and many may not. I’m from Jamaica, the land we love ❤️. I’m honestly speechless… I’m only 23, and I’ve never experienced a hurricane like this nor have most of the younger generation.

Jamaica is one of the most beautiful places on earth a land full of vibrant culture, warm smiles, good food, and people who love deeply. But right now, our island paradise is hurting.

Hurricane Melissa has left my country in shambles. My heart cries for my island. I think almost everyone has been affected in some way whether minor or major. But the fact remains: we are a small, developing nation, and standing on our own in times like this is tough.

Personally, I’ve suffered damage to my roof and household. During the storm, part of the roof came off, and water flooded our home through cracks in the windows and doors places I can’t even remember. My sister, mom, and I spent the whole night sweeping and wiping, trying to keep things together, especially worrying about my sick grandmother and praying she wouldn’t get worse.

By God’s grace, some parts of the roof were saved thanks to the sandbags my mom and I placed as anchors ⚓️ before the winds got stronger. That small act made a big difference and reminded me that faith in God and quick thinking can still bring hope, even in the middle of fear.

Some of my neighbors lost is greater, entire roofs gone, homes completely destroyed. Across the island, many are left without shelter, food, or clean water. And sadly, in the midst of all this pain, there are also looters, taking advantage of an already broken situation. It’s heartbreaking to see, and I can only pray it doesn’t get worse.

Our country has just been hit by one of the most devastating hurricanes in our history. So many lives were lost people died in their homes, others are sick, families are homeless, and entire communities are in ruins.

Despite everything, we’re still standing and helping one another as best we can. But recovery won’t be easy. Every bit of support will help families rebuild their homes, get clean water, food, and basic necessities.

Please keep Jamaica in your thoughts and prayers. Any contribution, no matter how small, means so much.
