I am spending six weeks in Ecuador this summer volunteering at an daycare center. The facility has up to 90 children at a time aged 9 months to 5 years old. In an extremely impoverished area, the average income is $300. Most of these children never had a snickers bar and have extremely dilapidated and minimal toys to play with between them all. This facility is a daycare for children who come from broken homes. Many of the kids have single mothers who need to leave their children in safe hands or former drug addicts for parents who are trying to restart their lives.
I'll be staying with a local family, and working with locals who are only Spanish-speaking. Hopefully the language immersion will improve my Spanish skills quickly! I will try to post updates and photos as frequently as possible. I'm looking forward to experiencing a new culture, and I'm so excited to play with the kiddos all day every day :)
