Triathlon for Associates Board
Hi family and friends,
In a journey this year to challenge myself and be healthier mentally and physically I have decided train for and compete in my first race, the Chicago Triathlon on August 27th!! Although I am excited for myself personally, I also wanted to find a more meaningful way to find the motivation to train and make an impact on other people.
As some of you may or may not know, I have been a member of the North Shore Associate Board for the past 3 years. In short, our group of about 45 young professionals here in Chicago raise sponsorship dollars through coordinating events, and corporate and individual sponsorships for the neo-natal unit for the hospital up in Evanston. Often times, this is small needs for the nurses that the hospital may not be able to fund, or gas cards, gift cards, or other similar donations for families that are not as fortunate financially and find it hard to even make it to the hospital to visit their new born.
The majority of our funding goes to research projects that we as members hand pick from a committee of doctors and researchers who pitch us for their funding. This cycle, we chose to fund a research project focusing on trying to get ahead of mapping the genome for postpartum mood disorder because we felt as a group there is not enough research dedicated to the mental side of health. This resignates really strongly with me in my personal battle with mental health and it's going to help motivate me through the bad days of training.
