There’s been a lot of talk about Inflation this past year, especially around rising food costs. And although we’ve all probably seen some form of media coverage this month focused on those most vulnerable in our community who have been impacted the hardest by inflation, it’s often hard to understand the reality of the situation from simply reading a newspaper. We’d read the articles and seen some of the headlines over these past few months, but we also didn’t have a full grasp of the situation until we went to see for ourselves.
Now, it’s usually around this time of year that we start to discuss our holiday fundraising efforts, and because of these headlines, we really wanted to support a community not only close to home, but one that may have been more adversely affected by inflation, and so we visited our local food bank in Flemingdon Park - https://www.fcfoodbank.com.
When we first arrived on a random October Wednesday morning, there was already a line up forming out the door and the place was a hive of activity as volunteers worked to fill boxes with dwindling supplies. We met with the manager, Chadi Razek, among the hustle and bustle and although clearly very busy and feeling the overwhelming demand, he gave us a warm welcome and was grateful for our visit.
He told us how the food bank currently supports over 600 families, who depend on them to provide basic necessities every week, and how during the holiday season, the need is even greater. The bank is open from 9am-3:30pm on only Monday and Wednesday, but by the time we left at 10:30 am they had already run out of basic items like canned vegetables, and the demand was clearly out pacing supply.
After this visit our mission was clear, and now the very purpose of the email you’re receiving today. As a member of our greater Toronto community, we need to help feed these hungry families! And we are calling on friends, family, and clients alike to help us in this effort and give whatever they can to help.
That said, over the next few weeks we will be asking for and collecting any and all nonperishable food items you can spare - so please get in touch if you’re willing to help. Alternatively, we get it’s a busy time of year, and if you don’t have any items but would like to help, please consider a donation to our gofund me page – where 100% of all proceeds will be used to buy grocery staples and delivered to the food bank on December 14th.
On behalf of these neighbours in need we thank you for your consideration and donations and we look forward to sharing our collective impact within the community.
Best,
