I am Trent's mom Katie. This is Trent and his dog Charlie. Trent was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in November 2014 at the age of 7. We have had a difficult time managing Trent's diabetes that is partly why we adopted Charlie from an animal shelter in June 2016. With the help of Cheline a trainer at Wind River Tails and Trails, Charlie passed an evaluation at the shelter. During the evaluation Charlie showed potential for being a diabetic alert dog because of his great nose. Since Charlie has been at home with us he has (without any formal training) alerted Trent to two low blood sugars by pawing at Trent's face. This weekend Trent spent one night in ICU and another on the Pediatric Unit because he was in Diabetic Ketoacidosis. We want to continue with Charlie's training so we can hopefully not have an event like this happen in the future. Charlie will be doing a "board and train" with the team at Wind River Tails and Trails to learn how to alert Trent or a family member when Trent's blood sugars are too high or too low plus learn lots of other basic manners and obedience.
Trent and Charlie bonded immediately and until this weekend's hospital stay they had not spent a night away from eachother. While Trent was away, Charlie chose to sleep on a pair of Trent's jeans. Charlie is Trent's loyal companion. Trent saved Charlie from the shelter and now Charlie will be able to help Trent with his diabetes! Trent and his whole family will be incredibly grateful for any donation you would like to give to help us reach our goal.
