My dear friend, Travis Laughlin, was arrested November 16, 2020 at the Alamance County Commissioners Meeting in Graham, North Carolina. Since July of 2020, Travis has joined with thousands of others to protest the long-standing racist and oppressive government structures in his home county of Alamance perpetrated by the County Commissioners, the Sheriff's Department, as well as local Neo-Confederate and Neo-Nazi organizations.
Numerous local and national media outlets such as The Guardian, NPR, and Rolling Stone have captured the struggle for justice in Alamance County this year. Travis has been fighting and organizing with local leaders to hold leaders accountable and bring true change to this rural community from which he hails.
On November 16, 2020, Travis, along with approximately 30 other individuals, protested outside the Alamance County Commissioners meeting as they had been doing since the summer in an effort to voice opposition to the county leadership's refusal to address community concerns around racial inequity and the removal of a confederate statue that is prominently situated in front of the county courthouse. Travis and ten other protestors entered the courthouse to observe the commissioners meeting and to hear public commentary halfway through the meeting's agenda but were soon surprised to hear the chairperson, Amy Galey, call a 48-hour recess without warning, not allowing public commentary that evening, and not responding to the public's question as to whether public commentary would be allowed at the rescheduled meeting. While leaving the meeting and expressing frustration with the County Commissioner's efforts to silence them, Travis and other protestors were surrounded by Alamance County Sheriff's Department officers and arrested. These officers physically assaulted two individuals, a young Black leader who was given a concussion and a middle-aged woman who suffered significant injuries to her arm and shoulder as a result of the police using excessive force.
We are raising funds to cover his legal fees as a result of his arrest. Any extra funds will be used to support justice and equity work in North Carolina as recommended to me by Travis.
Please support Travis and the work of racial justice in Alamance County!!!
