Lawyers for Detained Families
Donation protected
As we have all seen in the news, in recent months, there has been a major crisis at the border with children being separated from their parents as they cross the border into the United States. Politics aside, children should not be separated from their parents. As Americans, we are better than this. The President's recent Executive Order has stopped the practice of separating kids, but it now creates another set of legal problems from the "zero-tolerance" policy.
Due to the current policy, families and children will continue to be detained in detention centers in many locations in the United States. Unfortunately, these families do not have the ability to pay for legal services. I've partnered with Lawyers for Good Government ("L4GG") and will be serving as a volunteer lawyer to aid in providing pro bono legal assistance to those detained at Dilley Detention Center, the largest family detention facility in the country which has capacity for 2,400 women and children. The volunteers appear in court, represent clients at credible fear interviews and bond proceedings, complete client intakes and client preparation; gather research and draft motions and declarations to support claims, and provide protection to the children and women from harsh detention conditions. To learn more about this project and how you can help, please visit the link: http://caraprobono.org/.
This volunteer project also requires that any participating lawyer take time off of work and provide our own translators that accompany us to the detention center. We and our translators pay all of our own travel expenses during the time that we volunteer. The money raised will be used to pay for travel expenses for the team and any additional money will be donated to L4GG for others doing the same work. Thank you in advance for your support!
